It could be a bad unit, if even after a switch of batteries and this is happening then I wouldn't really be saying the usual "bad reception, internet and daily uses stuff" I think you should give a call and see if you could get it replaced under warranty.

How is the coverage where you are located? If you are in an area of low signal strength the phone will drain the battery much quicker.

Coming from a SE 810i which would last for days I find that the Pearl rarely lasts more than a day. I'd recommend keeping a spare in your bag...

If you spend a lot of time in a car try this trick:
I got one of the cheap "case logic" soft pockets that attach to your vent in the car and stuffed a Seidio charging cradle into it. The car charger with a thin retractable cable plugs in through a little hole I cut into the back.
When I get in my car I just rest the phone in the cradle where I can see the screen easily (useful for navigation software w/GPS unit and the voice dialing so I can see if it is calling the right person) and it is charging. Don't have to hassle with a thing!

snoxr500 have you looked into an extended battery through Seidio?

Wirelessly posted (8100: BlackBerry8100/4.2.1 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102)

I'm having the same issue. My battery only lasts through the day, and midway through the second at best. The damn things brand new and I just can't understand what the issue is. I live 5 miles from DC so there's no issues with reception around here, and the only thing that I can think of us the colorpearl program that I use, but now I leave it off till the night rolls around. I don't even know what's its like to have a phone last 3 days on a single charge and I'm just jealous. The seidio stuff is an alternative but not all that attractive, and why should I have to get a new batt right out the box?

It's definitely not normal. One suggestion I can offer is that make sure you close the browser or other applications when you exit out of them. Hit menu and then close. If you hit the END (red) key, it will not end the app or browser. And it will keep on running and draining your battery.

I can watch my battery level drop as I surf the web and do other data related things on it. Its the price of high functionality.

I only get 2 days max with my standard battery. Was that way from the start. I bought the extended battery from Seidio. Problem solved!

Seidio option sounds good. However, they don't sell the battery door by itself. So, if one buys the extended battery / door, and if you happen to break just the cover, they do not sell the door by itself. So, basically, they force you to buy another battery (if one breaks or damages the door) to get a new door.
