Default Switching between SureType and Multi-Tap

Please Login to Remove!

According to Stinssondog's Pearl guide you can switch between SureType and Multi-Tap by holding the "Next key (*)". What is this next key, the "*" is the asterisk key that's used for symbols, not switching input method.

Basic question, I know, but it's driving me up the wall.

Use that key in a text typing field, hold it a second, not tap it.

Ok, so it only works in a text-typing field? Is there an easy way to switch in a text message / email?

Yes, hold down the * key for a second or two while typing an email or text message.
This toggles between Suretype and Doubletap.

Sorry, but I don't get it. Are we talking about the asterisk key, as in to the left of the space key? Cos if I press that I get the Symbol meny popping up, and I've tried holiding and tapping it.

Yes, that's the key we're talking about. Don't tap it.
Hold it longer. The ABC in the top right corner of your screen will disappear.
If you hold it again, the ABC will reappear.

If yours is not behaving like this... then you're not in a text field, or your phone is broken.

I'm afraid that's not happening - if I press and hold the Symbol menu just stays there. Maybe that's something with the latest OS, I've got the TIM Italy release. What actually happens on your phone - does the symbol menu dissapear after which it switches between the input methods?

Default same problem trying shortcut to enable sure type

i also have that problem

in a text entering program I try holding down the "*" key but I just get the pop up symbol menu

I cannot toggle to sure type

I also have the latest TIM Italy firmware so maybe it eliminated this option

Yes, the new OS (4.2.1.66) will not allow you to switch using the * key. You have to manually go into options and change your input method.

Ah, that's really annoying. I find it difficult to enter new words - after each character you have to scroll in the suggestions list to select the combination you want, and that can be tiresome for long words. On my old SE 810i it was just a matter of switching to text input mode using the shortcut key, typing in the word, reenabeling the predictive text which would select the word and add it to the dictionary. Slick, quick and oh-so-easy.

I know, really annoying as I often switch! Somehow I doubt they will "fix it" though, they removed it on purpose after all

It could've been by accident. Too bad RIM doesn't have a developer blog like Flickr does. Let the users know what's going on....will ya?
