Ok I have ripped songs onto my SD card. Now I have created a playlist based on other posts here (thanks!). So my question is do I need to have the song ripped to the SD card in order to have it on a playlist? In other words can I ripp a new song directly to the playlist or does it have to be on the SD drive before I can move it to a playlist? I don't want to have the song in two places taking up space on the drive.

You can just have the song on a playlist, it doesn't have to be in 2 places. A playlist is basically a folder of songs that are on the SD card. I think if the same song is in 2 playlists/folders it will be on there twice, because the standard media player doesn't support playlists per se like iTunes does, just folders of songs.
