It sounds like you accidentqally downloaded Device Manager instead of Desktop Manager.

Go back to the RIM BlackBerry Support web site and download Desktop Manager 4.2, SP1.

After reading your post I went back to the website, I couldnt find the desktop manager so I typed in the search desktop manager at the website, then it shows:

Quote:
"Downloads

BlackBerry® Desktop Manager — enables smartphone and email configuration, as well as synching between the BlackBerry® smartphone and your PC.

BlackBerry® Device Manager — includes USB drivers for BlackBerry smartphones. The BlackBerry Device Manager lets you charge your smartphone and transfer data through the USB connection without the need for BlackBerry Desktop Manager.

Download BlackBerry® Desktop Software, including service packs, desktop manager and device manager."
So i click downloads, and other then the server stuff and pocket whatever,
I see the blackberry desktop stuff, so im thinking it comes with both ?

i downloaded the new one like I said and I only have device manager ..

and even in my blackberry start up folder I only see device manager and the read me file, no desktop manager anymore.

Is it somewhere else, or do i need to download something else, I cant seem to find how to get the desktop manager.

thanks though

Go to BlackBerry
Click on SUPPORT at the bottom of the page.
Click on 'DOWNLOADS' on the left side of the page.
Click the link called 'BlackBerry® Device and Desktop Software' in the middle of the page.
Click the link called 'Download BlackBerry Device and Desktop Software' in the middle of the page.
Select 'Blackberry Desktop Software v4.2 Service Pack 1' from the drop down menu.
Press Next.
Click the 'Download' link on the resulting page in the BlackBerry Desktop Software v4.2 SP1 (English only) section.
It's a 45.5MB download posted 06-Feb-07 and contains everything you need.

What type computer are you on? PC or MAC?

AFTER you download the Desktop Manager software, you must FIND the file, double click the *.EXE file, to open and run it and follow the ensuing instructions. In other words, you must then INSTALL the Desktop Manager software after downloading it.

Please follow my instructions above. You are obviously not downloading and installing the correct file.
JSanders asked if you installed the file after downloading it... you never answered.

The file you should download and install is called 'Desktop Software v4.2 Service Pack 1 (English).exe'
Is that the file you have?

Find the 'Desktop Software v4.2 Service Pack 1 (English).exe' file on your hard drive, double-click it, and complete the installation.

And forget about DEVICE MANAGER. It has nothing to with what you are attempting to do. Yes I see Device Manager installed.

It is NOT Desktop Manager. Have you actually double-clicked on the file to run and install it? You are looking to download and then double click a file named: "BlackBerry Desktop Software v4.2 Service Pack 1 (English).exe"

Gmponey, we are only trying to help.

Gmoney, it would be most helpful to us (to help you) if you would simply answer the question that was asked...
--did you follow exactly Penquin's instructions to download, etc.?
--Confirm you have downloaded "BlackBerry Desktop Software v4.2 Service Pack 1 (English).exe"
--Confirm that you actually went the above named file on your computer and double clicked it.
--The install file will run. You have an option to leave a shortcut to start Desktop Manager on your desktop. Did you do that?
