Unhappy Unable to sync Outlook 2003 contacts

Please Login to Remove!

I'm using version 4.2 of the BlackBerry software that came with my Red 8100 from Cingular.

I have about 850 contacts in Outlook 2003. But the sync software
thinks there are 3000+ contacts with often three to five duplicates.

Can anyone explain what's going on and how to fix it?

I'd be happy to use some other sync program if that would solve
the problem.

If I can't sync the Outlook 2003 contacts, I'll have to return the phone
to Cingular.

Are you saying the Desktop Manager software won't synch at all, or that it recognizes more contacts than you think it should, therefore you won't let it synch? If it won't synch at all it's possible that your Outlook is too old (my iPod won't synch with my Outlook 2004, it says it's too old). If it says you have 3000 contacts and you say you have 850 could that be because you have more than one entry (phone #, email, address) for some of the contacts? Maybe it counts each entry as a contact. If so try synching to see what happens. You can always wipe it clean afterwards.

No, Desktop Manager does not count your contacts such as that, it counts them same as outlook.
I wonder if there are contacts saved on you SIM card which are creating the duplicates. Remember, the SIM card will ONLY store one phone per name, and would create duplicate names in your address book.

I disagree. As far as I know, Desktop Manager does not touch the SIM card address book at all - doesn't even back it up.

Unhappy Unable to sync Outlook 2003 contacts

Let me further clarify: I'm starting with a completely
empty address book on the 8100.

Outlook 2003 has about 850 contacts. When I try to sync,
the sync software says it is going to transfer 3000 contacts.
If I let that happen, I think it runs out of space on the 8100--
it only get's into the R's. Worse, there will be many duplicates: Joe Smith
who appeared only once in Outlook 2003 may appear 3 to 5
times in the 8100 phonebook. Most of the duplicate entries
do not contain what they should--they may be missing some
of the phone numbers or the email address.

That's wierd, I don't have an answer for you. Maybe try calling Cingular and get referred to their Blackberry specialist for help. My thought is there could could be a compatability issue with 2003 Outlook and the OS on the Pearl like there is for iTunes and my older version of Outlook. But I have MS Office XP Standard for Students version 2002, and mine synchs just fine. Try calling customer service and get the BB specialist, maybe they can solve it.
EDIT: I actually installed Outlook after I got my pearl and added contacts as I went, I didn't start with a huge list like you have.
