Default Pearl w/ out Data Plan... Help...

Please Login to Remove!

Hello. I bought the pearl yesterday to use for calls and text messaging only. I did not purchase a data plan. Will I get charged extra for using the maps function? Also, what does the 'Turn Wireless On/Off' button do? If I have it on will I recieve additional charges on my bill? Does that connect to my home wireless? Why does my phone say 'edge' underneath the signal bar? Does that mean it will charge me extra? Thanks so much for your help.

whew.

--If you use data from your carrier without a Data Plan, you likely will get charged for its use. You need to ask them how much.
--Turn Wireless off will restrict any wireless data from transmitting to/from your BB. Your phone will continue to function as phone.
--If it is on, and you receive/transmit data, you could receive charges from your carrier for the data usage.
--No, you cannot connect to your home wireless.
--"edge" lowercase or "EDGE" upper case?

That means you are getting an edge signal from your carrier, but you are unable to authenticate to the BlackBerry network... due to the fact that you don't have a BlackBerry Data Plan.
It has nothing to do with billing.

Without a Blackberry data plan, it can only be 'edge'.

Good, then that answers his last question... with "edge" he will not be transmitting data, thus no additional charge.

It's 'edge' in lowercase. I tried turning wireless off like you mentioned, and it wouldn't let me make any calls. It kept telling me I needed to turn the 'radio' on.

That's the way it's supposed to work.
Turn Wireless Off disables ALL wireless features of the phone.... including the phone features.

No, my bad. If you use the icon "Turn Wireless Off" that restricts the phone.

You want to go Options > Network > click to turn off data.

I really appreciate your help! So what about 'maps'... do I get charged when I open that? On a seperate note, I disabled data like you suggested... Thanks!

Yes, BBMaps uses data. However, on Cingular you need to subscribe to a BB data plan in order to get the data. No data plan, no data. No data, no charge. You won't be charged for data with no data plan. This isn't the case with Verizon I've heard, though, but it's the case with most of the other carriers for BB.

Nope. BB data requires a BB data plan.
