is there a equalant to openoffice for the blackberry? and will the blackberry and open office "talk" to each other for lack of a better term....

You'll need to save your documents as a .txt or as a word file for the blackberry to open it I presume. As far as openoffice for the blackberry, there is no freeware. The only thing is eOffice.
I've never used it personally, so I can't really comment on functionality.
