| | Recommended dB levels for custom ringtones?

I recently converted a few of the wave files I use for sound events in Windows to the mp3 format and loaded them on my 8100. My reason was one of usability; between my computer and my phone there would be one common sound for incoming mail, one for calendar events, and one for tasks. So far it’s worked out great.
While converting those wave files, I noticed that the sound level was much lower than the ringtones downloaded from RIM. The files RIM provides seem to top out at 0dB. So for consistency, I amplified the wave files accordingly (using Adobe Audition) and then saved them as mp3s.
On the whole, I find this dB level to be rather loud. Since owning the 8100, I most often use the “Quiet” profile. That is, unless I’m in my car with the stereo on or the windows open. The “Quiet” profile would be just fine, except that the phone will occasionally wake me up at night because “Quiet” is not really that quiet.
Does anyone else share this assessment? Are there any audiophiles out there that could recommend a lower dB setting which might make the “Normal” profile more usable under common conditions and the “Quiet” profile more discreet?
