I am a new pearl owner. And after having a number of PDA's and smart phones I think this is the one. My question is I looked around and could not find an in depth how to install and mod guide. I do not have internet yet so I have to use the DM. I downloaded the color track ball program and noticed that there is a cod and alx file. I saw that someone said that you just put the alx file in through the DM but what about the cod file. I just don't want to mess anything up. If someone could point me in the right direction I would appreciate it. Kind if surprised that there was not a how to mod section here. But I am glad to be a enw member of the community. And hopefully can bring something to the table once a little more educated. Thanks again

Put the colorpearl.cod and colorpearl.alx in one folder. Then use application loader and the "add" function to add the .alx. The .alx will tell the desktop manager to load the .cod file to the BB.

First off let me thank you very much for the QUICK reply. Second is that pretty much the protocol to follow with most mods from the DM. Again just want to make suure that I do things correctly. Looking forward to becoming a new blackberry addict. Also what is the auto backlight setting. I find that my backlight has a mind of its own. Sometimes it will turn on and sometimes it won't. Is this normal

For adding 3rd party apps with no data plan, that is the procedure. As far as the backlight setting, yes, it has a mind of it's own. They improved it in OS 4.2.1.94. There is a sticky thread about upgrading your OS to that version in the 8100 forum.

BTW, you might change your profile. It says you are using a 7100.

Take your time and look/search through the Forum there are weeks of reading and modding you can do to the Pearl, if she truly is the one this time.

But yeah, once you have an ALX file on your desktop or designated folder, you open DM and tell it to add programs. While in DM, you then search or point DM to the alx file and it will then install the file when you say "next" or whatever the command button is.

As to the backlight, look that up in the threads. Subject has been discussed since Sept 2006. Later operating systems fixed the issue, but took away the ability to turn the feature on and off. But then even later operating systems put the feature back in.

I have never wanted to lose the ability to turn auto-backlight off so I am running the original .42 T-Mo OS. But read the threads and you can find the latest on the issue.
