Default about to buy a pearl

Please Login to Remove!

Hi everyone I've been looking at the pearl for awhile now and have researched it to death, I'm finally taking the plunge (happily) and buying one. Before I do though I wanted to ask some veteran users a quick question. I'm contemplating buying from a private seller (I'm not eligible for a new customer discount because I just upgraded my phone - that's a whole different story) to cut the cost a bit but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as far as what to look for in a used blackberry. I know some phones have an internal timer that says how many minutes the phone has been used since it was first turned on, does the blackberry have anything like that? If so, where can I find it? Also, any other suggestions on things to check (like the USB connection, I've heard a horror story about someone buying a blackberry with a broken USB port unbeknownst to them) to make sure it's good to go would be much appreciated. Thank in advance for your comments and I look forward to learning more about this wonderful little device!

How much you are paying to get a used one from the private seller?

if it is around $200, I would sign up for a new contract and get a free pearl from Ushopwireless . Use the $200 to pay the penalty to Tmobile for early termination.

I am not sure if this work, but I would try. Unless you got a real good deal on the used one.

p/s: I believe there is no such thing as minute check on the pearl.

Can you list out what are included in "everything"?

for example: microsd card, case, desktop cradle, bse skin, holster and etc.

$300 would be a bit high as Tmobile is selling $349.99 as their retail price.

$300, does it included shipping with insurance?

Please advise, thanks.

MsJosay,

You need to make sure it is a trusted seller. Read other feedback.

Ask these questions:
1- Has it been connected via BES (BlackBerry Enterprise Service) as a corporate BlackBerry, and if so, has the Security Policy been cleared from it? (look at Options > Security > anything listed under Services?
2- Make sure the prior user has released his PIN # and cancelled his BIS account related to this BlackBerry.

If the previous user wiped the BB, it will likely clear the BB of the total talk time (look at Phone > Status) I bet that will be cleared also.

And if you want a newish pearl that is unlocked without a contract it will probably run you 250 min.

If you getting the phone from Ebay, find out what the average selling price of the phone on Ebay that is new in the box with accessories still in the box.

I will usually choose like around 4 to 6 cell phones to watch. When it is over, I check what the final price is.

If you need help calculating the average price than let me know.

From that, I will go and start bidding on the cell phones and set a maximum price that I am willing to bid on.

You may not win on the first phone you bid on but eventually, you will win a cell phone. Don't forget about the shipping costs.

You don't want to bid on a cell phone whose feedback has 10 or less. I have seen some scams out there before with 10 or less feedbacks.

Also ask what the condition of the phone is. You don't want a phone that been abused and have lots of scratches on the screen.

Thanks everyone for the great advice, it looks like although I'll most likely have to pay full retail price from T-Mobile ($350) it'll be worth it in that I won't have to worry about getting scammed or ending up with a bad phone. From everything I've heard on these forums and from friends who have blackberries, I won't be sorry I spent the money . Thanks again for all the advice!

How do you tell if the PIN# was released? I just checked my pearl I got a few weeks ago and it lists a PIN#. I have not activiated a data plan yet.
