Was this what RIM was trying to offer with the pearl and Sony just did it better? I'm a former Sony Ericsson phone owner and i was loyal to them for years up until the pearl. Now looking at this article, the dimensions of the phone and what they say it can do, i cant help but think that this is what everyone thought the pearl should be. Wondering if RIM can compete with it? And now im looking at my pearl in a new light, perhaps i just needed to hold out on Sony for a while longer. What do you all think?

Meh I like the design of my Pearl and I am happy with the functionality of it for the most part. Not sure on the quality of Sony phones either seeing as some of my friends have had them and they weren't anything special.

Well, you should first note that the Sony phone won't be out until Q4 of 2007. The Pearl will have been out on the market for over one year. In the cell phone market one year is a lifetime. Sure one can wait for something to come out, six months to a year, but I don't have that kind of patience.

My brother is a sit-on-the-fence type, but not for new or different models, instead he waits for the price to go down. I had a 42" flat panel TV in 1999. My brother is waiting for the prices to drop and is only now getting ready to buy. So he saved thousands over what I paid, but he has gone 8 years without a flat panel TV.

To be sure, many members, me included, give a phone about a year of use before upgrading to another model, or the same model with added features. This is in line with and validated by T-Mo's upgrade policy, which is every 11 months one can get a new phone at t-Mo's upgrade price.

In fact, the Pearl is coming out with new features [better camera, WiFi, GPS to name a few]. So compared to the Sony, there's not that much difference between the two, at least not enough to say that one should pick one phone over the other.

Bottom line, give it a year or two and today's hot phone will be ready for the trash heap. When I read about the Sony I did not see anything that caused me to think "I want that."

i hear whats being said and at the time i posted i had not heard of the new "komet", it looks promising, lets hope that rim can get it out on the first try without all the bugs that came with the pearls release.

Any word on when the "komet" launches?

The 8120 [I think that is what it is] is slated to come out in Aug-Sept 2007. I can't imagine that a supposed Pearl 2 would come out soon after that. Perhaps the Pearl 2 is on the drawing boards, set for release in late 2008?

Moreover, the way I read it is that the "Komet" announcement is more speculation and rumor.

In any event, depending on when you got your Pearl, you can upgrade in 11 months. So all is not lost since during that time you get to use the coolest phone on the market [IMHO, of course].

I'd hit it. Only if they take out that t9 keyboard and add a real one.

Exactly pearl well exceeds this Sony for the mere fact that at least we have a sure type qwerty...
