Default Loose Trackball assembly. . . .

Please Login to Remove!

I've had my new pearl for about a week or so now, and the trackball assy. has always moved around a bit. Today I thought I'd remove the retaining ring, and make sure the 2nd ring was snapped in all the way. No big deal, right? Wrong. . . I removed the outer silver ring, and the trackball assembly just falls out of the phone. The 2nd metal ring was never installed!

Now, I can't call AT&T and say "I need a new pearl because this one is missing a piece.", so is there a place where I could order one of these? The peal is pretty much flawless in every way, and I already have an invisible shield on it, so I really don't want to mess with exchanging it.

Thanks!

Look through the 8100 forum. There are two places that now carry the assemblies. One is 39.00 and the other is 59.00 but you have to buy the WHOLE assembly.

I would attempt to return the phone to a store. I have heard of others with this issue. Just put the top back on and ask to compare it to one in the store. When you demonstrate the different feel I am sure they will replace it.

I would call and make an exchange. They do not need to know you took it apart. Dramatize the problem. Tell them the trackball stops working at times and it is super loose. They will not question it, especially since you just got the phone.

Simply insist that the trackball is messed up and politely DEMAND a new phone. Be polite and diplomatic. Even tell them that you are a member of BBF and we said it is messed up. End of story.

You are entitled to a new phone under the warranty and the law of implied warranty of merchantability [don't ask]. Call them and get a phone or I will label you a wimp.

Moreover, in most states you have at least a two week trial period, where you can return the phone, no questions asked. Threaten that and they will give you a new phone.

And to heck with the price of the skin. If you ordered the Best Skins Ever skin, those are three for $21, shipped. So you should have some spares. If you got a different one, e.g. ShieldZone, call them and tell them you have to return the phone to the carrier. They may give you a new skin under their lifetime warranty, as a gesture of goodwill. But I would not let the skin price prevent you from making a warranty claim.

Bonus Comment: There was some other member in here who made a warranty claim because of the trackball being loose. He got a phone.

I guess that's what's wrong with mine, too... I have the exact same problem. How could they "forget" to install the 2nd ring on so many phones? Unbelievable.

Last night I took custody of a friend's new Pearl so to install programs, a microSD chip, case, etc.

I disassembled the trackball to make sure all was there. That inner "retaining" ring was in place.

It's a small thing and I could see a few out of 10 million not getting installed. Not sure if that is a hand assembled piece or if a robot is performing the task. Moreover, if you look at the pics of the inner ring and the "clamp" holding the trackball together, they look the same. If one is hand assembling the trackball, I could see on occasion one not seeing that the inner retaining ring is missing because without it in place it still looks like the ring has been installed.

Based on the number of posts in here, are there more than two to three rings supposedly missing? If not, I don't think three are "so many phones."

However, since 99.9% of Pearl users have not and would not rip apart the trackball to check on this [they would either use the Pearl or return it because it is "loose"] I wonder if you have stumbled upon something, the missing retaining ring scandal.

Maybe we ought to start a controversy and force a recall. Have everyone rip apart their trackballs to see if that ring is in there.

Sidenote: It's interesting to examine the mechanics of that inner retaining ring [that's what I call it]. While it has some locking tips, it does not really secure the trackball into the socket all that well. My impression is that the chrome plastic ring is what mainly holds the trackball in place. That inner ring seems to simply make sure the the trackball stays centered.

I installed the trackball without that inner ring and the trackball seems to hold firmly into place with only the chrome plastic ring.

This causes me to question, is the problem NOT the missing inner ring, but rather the plastic chrome ring? That ring is cheap molded plastic. I could see that in the molding process some rings coming out poorly formed and that ends up causing a loose fitting trackball.

good post SanFran, thanks for the pictures. I definitely don't have a retaining ring properly installed on my phone. Like you said, though, 99.9% of the people who own these things probably wouldn't be annoyed enough by a little wobbling to research it online and take the assembly apart. So who knows how widespread the problem is?

Mine has always been a little loose and I just figured that's how it's supposed to be. But a couple days ago I took out the trackball to clean it and I'm missing the inner retaining ring too! I'm just not sure if it's bad enough to bother fighting to get a replacement phone, re-upgrading the OS, reinstalling all my extra apps, etc.
