Last night I took custody of a friend's new Pearl so to install programs, a microSD chip, case, etc.
I disassembled the trackball to make sure all was there. That inner "retaining" ring was in place.
It's a small thing and I could see a few out of 10 million not getting installed. Not sure if that is a hand assembled piece or if a robot is performing the task. Moreover, if you look at the pics of the inner ring and the "clamp" holding the trackball together, they look the same. If one is hand assembling the trackball, I could see on occasion one not seeing that the inner retaining ring is missing because without it in place it still looks like the ring has been installed.
Based on the number of posts in here, are there more than two to three rings supposedly missing? If not, I don't think three are "so many phones."
However, since 99.9% of Pearl users have not and would not rip apart the trackball to check on this [they would either use the Pearl or return it because it is "loose"] I wonder if you have stumbled upon something, the missing retaining ring scandal.
Maybe we ought to start a controversy and force a recall. Have everyone rip apart their trackballs to see if that ring is in there.
Sidenote: It's interesting to examine the mechanics of that inner retaining ring [that's what I call it]. While it has some locking tips, it does not really secure the trackball into the socket all that well. My impression is that the chrome plastic ring is what mainly holds the trackball in place. That inner ring seems to simply make sure the the trackball stays centered.
I installed the trackball without that inner ring and the trackball seems to hold firmly into place with only the chrome plastic ring.
This causes me to question, is the problem NOT the missing inner ring, but rather the plastic chrome ring? That ring is cheap molded plastic. I could see that in the molding process some rings coming out poorly formed and that ends up causing a loose fitting trackball.
