You could just walk up to someone and say "hello".

this is actually funny....but you can do it. once i was in a cafe having coffee (in Astoria, Queens) and this was maybe 6 months after bluetooth became commonplace among phones. so i figured i'd make my phone look for other devices, and sure enough i found one.

almost all bt phones won't auto-accept a connection from a never before talked-to device. unless the owner of the phone is completely stupid and sets the bt portal wide open to anything incoming.

personally, i keep my bt undiscoverable, and only turn on bt when i need to use my headset and nav puck.

because of my experience in that cafe, i came up with an interesting name for my device so that if for some strange reason i do leave discovery on, the other person searching for bt devices will see: "a BB in Uranus"

I guess you are wondering because of those commercials they run once in awhile showing people meeting that way.

Actually, it's not common because one would have to leave his or her BT open to receiving communications. Not a good idea.

Here in San Francisco some bars and cafes were having PDA/Cell phone blue tooth events. People would send text messages to those whom they were interested in. This was a Y2K version of those bars that had telephones at each table. Singles would call the number posted at a table to express interest.

Far as I know the whole thing fizzled. I think because it was too difficult to get the individual devices to work. The news showed some guy running table to table trying to set up the devices to communicate.

Actually, judging by who was in the news clip, I think only geeks showed an interest in the concept. Assuming the typical geek profile, you can figure out the real reason the idea failed.

It can work pretty well if your in a swimming pool. Just yell..
"Blue"

And several people should yell back.."tooth."

Then go after them!!!!

Only problem is that you have to keep your eyes closed!!

It's called Bluejacking and it isn't as popular as it once was when Bluetooth first came out because most phones aren't manufactured with Bluetooth discovery always on set as the default
