Is there any way (preferably free) that I could listen to local radio on the pearl?

I think he was asking whether it's possible to tune to a local AM/FM radio station using a Pearl. Unfortunately, this is not possible. Terrestrial radio uses analog signals, while the Pearl is a GSM phone and has a digital antenna which is simply incapable of tuning to radio stations.

If your local radio station offers AACplus streaming, you can use the dollar5 media player to tune in over your data connection.

There are plenty of GSM phones out there that have the capability to stream am/fm radio signals. The digital antenna has nothing to do with tuning to the radio stations, it is simply a matter of frequency. For a more in depth look read this Howstuffworks "How the Radio Spectrum Works" but no, the Pearl does not have the capability to stream radio.

I read somewhere else that the shape of the antenna has a lot to do with it as well, which is why GSM, Wi-Fi, and satellite antennas have that distinct shape as opposed to just being a long metal pole. I'm pretty sure the phones you mentioned include a separate antenna for radio so that the phone can be tuned to a radio channel while still being on the GSM network.
