Is it possible to switch an AZERTY keypad with a QWERTY one? Does the BB OS automatically recognize the change, assuming that i am able to get ahold of a QWERTY to install.

No. You would need to change the actual board that goes under the keyboard, and buying a new BB would be cheaper and easier.

The alternative is to buy an external bluetooth AZERTY layout keyboard, assumig your BB is bluetooth!
