If you are talking about AT & T you should call the carrier and ask exactly how it works. That's better than relying on members in here that may get it wrong.

Most data plans include accessing the Net.

You should ask if the plan is unlimited like T-Mobile's data plan is.

Also ask what all the data plan includes, such as text messaging [doubtful]

And e-mail from BlackBerry/RIM.

Dial 611 on your Pearl and ask AT & T. It's a free call.

The $29.99 Blackberry Data Plan from AT&T includes unlimited blackberry data (Web Browsing, EMail, PIN Messaging, BlackBerry Messenger, various mapping progs, etc...)
It does NOT include text messaging, or the ability to attach to a BES for enterprise setup.

I beg to differ.
The majority of the members here know much more about AT&T's data plans than your typical AT&T customer care rep. Especially when it comes to BlackBerry specific plans.

I'm very new too BB myself... and I agree that the sales reps for cingular were lost when I called. I have a question myself... w/ the BB Data Plan; I can surf the web using 3rd party browsers (such as Opera) without any surcharges.. correct. And what about Yahoo IM, can I download that into the Pearl and not be charged?

My real question here is... w/ the BB Plan, what charges may I fall victim too?

just download jivetalk for IMs like MSN AIM Yahoo and Gtalk and the data plan will cover it with no problems.

Yes you can use opera with the data plan

As far as I know, all cingular BB data plans are unlimited data. However, depending on which plan you get you might have to pay for txt messages.

That's true to a degree, but IMHO while one can explain the various types of plans out there and even describe the plan that he or she has, that does not answer the type of plan a particular member has, e.g., as this member wants to know, does HIS plan include surfing the Net and is the plan unlimited. He will want to be darn sure it's unlimited before he surfs with reckless abandon.

Many times people sign up for plans that are a promotion. Those plans and terms can be different than what others in here have. So generic "AT & T plans are as follows" may not apply.

Also, as happened earlier this year, the member failed to say he was in a different country. Everyone was heatedly arguing about what their T-Mo plans provided, limited or unlimited. But that person later disclosed that he was in Europe, so the U. S. T-Mo unlimited data plan did not apply. Everyone just assumed the member was in the U.S.

And while members chiming in what THEIR plans are, that does not control the terms and conditions of the plan the inquiring member has. The only terms that apply are those provided in the contract between that member and the carrier.

I do agree, however, that customer service reps get it wrong some of the time and fail to adequately or clearly communicate what is what in a plan, but unless the member provides us with the specifics of his or her deal, I don't think BBF explanations of what in fact the member's plan includes is the answer to incompetent CSRs.
