Default Trackball just stopped scrolling down

Please Login to Remove!

I just received an e-mail on my BlackBerry, but when I went to read it I found that I couldn't scroll down. I can scroll up, left, right, but not down. wtf.

Had this happen to a friends 8100 yesterday. Here is what we did to fix it.
Follow the instructions to carefully take out the trackball and inspect the little rollers that sense the movement of the ball, they have little magnets on the ends and any small piece of metal can get in there and get stuck to them and thus foul the movement and prevent it from rolling (blowing air did not dislodge it but a quick flick of the object stuck to the magnet with a fingernail removed it). then reassemble and tada, number 5 is alive ;)

Hope that helps,
RGUARD

I would not recommend disassembling the trackball until you have tried to dislodge whatever is blocking it. A simple method for getting your trackball back on "track" is: Depress the trackball and roll it forcefully while it's still depressed first in the direction that the trackball is not functioning and then back the other several times.

You should be scrolling in no time!

Thanks for the feedback. I rolled it downward for about 1 min and it came back to life.

Anytime my trackball stops working properly I just blow on it. So far it's worked well for me. I keep my Pearl in my pocket all day so it's getting lots of pocket lint, dirt etc. I'm waiting to pull the trackball until I absolutely have to.

i deal with blackberries alot and i see a lot of trackballs that dont scroll a certain way. most of the time it is something stuck between the trackball and the four rollers around it. true, you can try rolling the trackball repeatedly to get rid of whatever is stuck, or blow into it. bad part about rolling the trackball repeatedly is if there is something big stuck in the roller, chances are you'll end up scratching the trackball severely. the trackball will not roll freely if this happens. what i normally do is i take apart the front faceplate, then i blow it through with compressed air. if that doesnt free up the trackball, i'll roll the ball while closely looking at the rollers. if i find something caught in the rollers, i'll use a piece of tape, apply it to the roller and lift up to remove what's stuck.
