Here's what is posted on T-MobileNews.com for dealers/employees regarding the update.

Quote:
BlackBerry Pearl 8100 Software Upgrade
[All Channels - T-Mobile Employees and Authorized Agent Partners Only]

Overview
On Tuesday, August 14, we will offer our customers a Handheld Software upgrade for BlackBerry Pearl 8100. It will include a number of improvements to the existing software.

Details
RIM BlackBerry Pearl 8100 Handheld Software Version: 4.2.1.103.
Customers with older versions of the software can download the upgrade onto their Windows-based PC at T-Mobile.com for free.
BlackBerry Pearl 8100 customers will receive SMS messages starting on August 14 that will state:
"Free message from T-Mobile: New important software upgrade available for your BlackBerry 8100. It's free. Visit Unsupported Browser from your PC."
The upgrade eliminates the need for the voice-only SOC.
Improvements in this upgrade include:
Redesigned Application list that is displayed when you press the Menu key from the Home screen.
Improved quality and reliability of the audio experience during phone calls
Ability to use t-zones browser, Instant Messaging and Picture Messaging for all customers (additional charges may apply)
Improved persistence of Call Logs and Messages
Improved consistent behavior of the ABC indicator
Improved stability when using a Bluetooth headset
Improved reliability of myFaves icon appearance
Improved reliability of keyboard lock feature

Here's to hoping the NEW T-Mo load fixes both issues!

Same here, we can only hope they'll both work properly. To stay up for midnight or not stay up for midnight, that is the question.

Cool I'm all done w/ the installation. Had to do a battery pull & resend service books for the email inboxes to show up. Otherwise the phone seems to be working just fine.

Something that wasn't mentioned in the bug fix list is that the Yahoo mail icons now show up correctly (a Y! icon, instead of a generic mail icon) It was broken on the .64 OS.

Here is the edited BlackBerry.alx file. Once you download, rename the file as alx instead of doc.

FYI because some wondered about the 4GB chip and this new OS, I installed the OS and the 4GB chip works fine.

I cant download it from any of the above links for some reason.

http://downloads.infospace.com/8100_v4.2.1.103.exe - just downloads a 67k file, and the rapid share doesn't do anything.

I have been running this since about 7AM this morning. Of course first thing I did was get my zen list back on. LOL

I bumped up from .101 and the upgrade went perfect. Usually after an upgrade things are pretty slow with viewing media and pictures while it has to render everything for the first time but it was almost as if I never upgraded. Jumping in/out of apps, calendar, call logs and messages was surprisingly snappy.

Looks to be a goodie!

Dave

It was weeks after TMO released .64 that they sent out the SMS message regarding a new OS.

Well, at this time I can report that the BT DUN does NOT work under the new software. I will continue to plug away at it, but it doesnt look promising..

Question... should you back up your device before starting? It seems redundant if the install does it automatically. I did both on my last upgrade, just curious if it was an unnecessary step or not.

Valid concern.

Any OS will work on ANY Pearl. OSs are not particular to any carrier. Operating systems are produced by RIM for the Pearl and given to carriers for distribution.

For sure, no carrier is going to get involved in developing software operating systems for phones they carry. Can you imagine the headaches. RIM might develop specific OSs for the military and government, but 1) we won't get our hands on those; 2) most likely will never know about such.; and 3) if someone does say he or she has that OS, better drop that friend like a hot potato.

I had just done a backup yesterday morning so I did not bother making one before the install.

But YES, you should always perform a manual backup just in case. It only takes a few minutes, so better to be safe......

Besides, I don't trust auto installs where it automatically backs up whatever. What if the power goes out? What if you accidentally bump into the Pearl causing a disconnect while the update is taking place, etc., etc.

Frequent backups are good.

I think the media player is a little different. Before this upgrade I couldn't turn the volume down all the way. I was testing a ringtone I made and didn't hear anything because I had the volume down.
