You will have to use this link and find another GSM carrier who has 4.2.0.64 available for download. I don't think TMo offers it anymore. If you downloaded it before they changed to .107 you can use the last one you downloaded.

.64 was the previous T-Mobile-US OS release. I believe a few other carriers have released a .103 version including TMO Czech. Not sure if that would have the same issues as the .103 that got pulled from TMO US and replaced by .107.

All of the 4.2.1 versions have this multi-tap issue. You have to go back to any version of 4.2.0. There are several carriers in that list that have 4.2.0 for the 8100 still. 4.2.1.71/.73 were the best 4.2.0 versions.

For those who feel this is an issue worth downgrading, I really suggest learning to use the SureType. It takes only a short time to figure it out and it's so much faster than hitting one key two times to get one letter. SureType works very very well (much better than T9.) You just have to realize that it's not predictive, it's just smart.

Type your entire word (to the end) but only hit the button once-regardless whether it's the first letter or second letter of the word. By the time you type the last letter it will have the correct word. This works 95% of the time and only makes errors on short words like "see" and "are" which use the same button combination.

It's really a good system once you get used to it.

Default Much faster - 08-27-2007, 01:42 PM

This OS is much faster than the previous. I was one of the ones thatwas able to update to .103 and that was very slow. The only issue I have is that I have lost the icon to turn bluetooth on/off...Anyone experience this or know of a way to get it back?

You should get it back when you pair your device. It should have backed up and restored though. Are you using the same theme as with 103?

...and please change your avatar.

That would make me super happy. Its such a small thing but it would mean so much!
I agree, I really miss that function.

By the way, have they added an icon for Saved Messages and Compose, or did I just not see them before? (Maybe I had them hid, and never realized it).

Yes the icons are there, just hidden. In the default tmobile zen theme, hit menu -> show all and you'll see them.

Alright.. well I upgraded to this OS while at my workstation PC at my office.

Happy to say that I went through the install process seamlessly.
There were no snags.
I went about my normal day while the upgrade was running,
and expected a 40 - 60 minute upgrade due to the amount of data my BB holds at any given time.

Backup, upgrade/install, and reload of the backup occurred in about 30-40 minutes.

I was having keyboard issues the couple days prior to the upgrade
(which is why I did the upgrade so soon), and I'm happy to report that it cured my issue, as well as very happy with the new text layout (not really layout, but highlight of whole word in SureType, the top display).

I do have a couple of snags so far regarding OS.
I text and email A LOT.

I have my settings to display the last 15 SMS messages when I open and reply to one.
75% of the time, the first SMS in the history (which should have been the last transmission, either in or out), shows up as the second to last, or even third and fourth last message.

Really quite irritating when I rely on the history feature to recall what I'm replying to.

Other than that, I use the Phantom theme, and once in a while, after a new SMS or email comes in, and the first portion of the text shows up on screen and highlights red, I'll read it, and the screen returns to grey, but the portion of the text never leaves the screen.

But, that's my only bug.

Very happy with the smoothness and operability of the OS so far.

Mucho better than the .73 I upgraded from.

I went from 64 to 107 and I wish I hadn't. I now have some call-drop issues (my poor dad got cut off twice when I had 5 bars of signal) and my email isn't working right. It no longer deletes emails on the server when I delete them on my phone. Very annoying.

I have a webserver and I will be happy to host a copy of the 64 OS if someone is willing to send it to me.

As mentioned previously, hosting the T-Mobile OS for download is of dubious legal standing; unless you have a good lawyer I would not adventure into hosting the OS for public download, you might get a call from The Man.

I see.

Well, I might store it on my webserver with no public link.

And I might give people a link to it if they PM me.

Mostly I would like a copy of the 64 OS because I want to install it on my phone, as the 107 OS is making me very sad.

It's a always a good idea to download the software even if you already have it on your device. Once they remove it, it's gone.

However, this carrier still offers 4.2.0.64. You can install it and it will be the same as TMo's version. After installation to your computer, just remember to delete the vendor.xml file

https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads...34F45C3E144D48

To find it I simply went through the list of GSM carriers in the following link:

If you're going to downgrade, you might just use 4.2.0.71; it offers a few bugfixes beyond .64 but no losses that I've ever found. I've been using .73 since it was released (.73 is just .71 with a new AT&T theme) and it's been rock solid - no sense going all the way back to .64 in my opinion. 4.2.0.71 is easily downloaded from many carriers in the FAQ list.

I agree, Rivvie. 4.2.0.71 (and .73) were the most stable of all the 4.2 OS's.

4.2.0.73 is not available anywhere in that list. However, .71 should be on somebody's download site. Follow the same link I provided above.

It's definitely on the Cincinnati Bell and Dobson/CellOne download pages, for those guys it's the only firmware they've ever had (4.2.0.71) for the 8100.

For me the new .107 version now deletes emails from the Gmail account, not just from the phone like it used to. Yahoo and MSN always deleted fine, but Gmail never did until now. Sweeeeeeet!

I have 31Mb free and have once again, lost a weeks worth of emails. This generally happens during/after running TeleNav. You'd think 31Mb free to start with would be enough. Quite aggravating. Memory issues have not been fixed.

Thanks for this update, John Clark.

I run my BB off a pretty smooth 29-31mb of avail. memory and have 0 issues whatsoever with the memory leak.

I'm a heavy user of Opera Mini, BB Browser, text/emailing, whilst using the media player, calendars and whatever apps appeal to my needs at that specific time.

I find this interesting.

Oh, real quick John...

You said you had weeks of emails. I'm just curious how many physical messages (in/out, according to DB sizes) you have including sms, email, mms, etc at any given time.. especially with weeks worth.

I think that's what's happening. I've emailed TeleNav about it. We'll see what they say, if anything.

Just wanted folks to know that emails/call logs can still be lost.

Did you delete the vendor.xml file as the instructions state? It's located in c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader

Tried the new 4.2.1.175 / 4.2.1.175 firwmare and found again the same recurring problem that I'm experiencing consitently. The process goes on smoothly but at the end I've got no coverage with the red SOS signal.

My 8100 device came with the 4.2.0.67 version installed from Movistar, my carrier here in Spain. I'm managing a lot of devices 8100 & 8800 through BES but I cannot upgrade the OS. Everytime I try I end up the same way, the red SOS.

It seems as if the device can only work with OS's supplied by my carrier. I've followed your advice and deleted the vendor.xml, and as you can see I can go through the upgrade process but the device doesn't like it.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

John Clark..I wanna go back to .64 now. Where is it on my computer and how do I get it back on my Pearl? (I upgraded to .103 but I never deleted .64). Thanks a ton for helping everyone with this upgrade stuff btw.
I have a way worse memory leak with .103 than I did before. Starts at 30mb and gets to 22mb real quick.

If you already have .64 on the computer, simply run the 4.2.1.103 OS .exe file again and select "remove." Then plug in the device again, and run Desktop Manager/Application Loader again and it will downgrade.

Did you try the .107 upgrade? Also, if I was going to downgrade, I'd install 4.2.0.71 or .73.
