How do I make sure I still have .64 on my pc? Assuming I do, I connect pearl, open/run .103 and remove it. Does that remove it from the pearl and leave it with no OS? Then disconnect pearl, reconnect and run DM/AL and it will automatically reinstall .64 as the OS? I just wanna make sure I have the steps right to do this.

No. You can either run the OS download file again or uninstall it from Control Panel-Add/Remove Programs. Then you can connect the device and run Desktop Manager.

Is the Pearl USB 2.0 or 1.1, the only reason I ask is that it takes FOREVER to transfer music onto the pearl from my computer, and I have it connected to a USB 2.0 Card. Oh and get this a few reps at TMO BB support say if you use a card bigger than 1GB it slows the pearl down.

Welcome to the forums, burky.

The time it takes to do the update depends on how much data is on the device. Also, it takes longer if a BES activation needs to take place, as well. Glad it all went well for you. And, yes, I hope most people don't install unused languages.

Default Why delete Vendor.xml? - 08-30-2007, 12:53 PM

This OS will work on any Pearl, regardless of carrier.

Pkg v4.2.1.175 app v4.2.1.107 Plt v2.3.0.83

File name: 8100M_PBr4.2.1_rel168_PL2.3.0.83_A4.2.1.107.exe

Download the OS here

Instructions for loading this OS on ANY carrier's 8100:

Instructions for installing:
(Be sure to check out TMo's installation instructions at the download site.)

1. Make sure you have the latest version of Desktop Manager installed. It's 4.2 SP2. Download it here. (The version listed on the TMo site is quite outdated, I don't recommend using that one.)
2. Download the above file to the PC then install it to the PC by running the file you downloaded.
3. Locate the vendor.xml file and delete it. It's located in c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader
4. Plug in BB and Open Desktop Manager. You should be prompted to upgrade.

The process takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much data you have to backup and restore during the process. Once it's done loading the new OS it will reboot (it may do this twice during the entire process.) You will see a white screen with an hourglass for up to 20 minutes at a time while the DM says "waiting for initialization." Don't unplug from the PC & Don't remove the battery unless the spinning hourglass has been there for 30 minutes or more. If the hourglass has been spinning for more than 30 minutes continuously you will need to wipe the device with JL_Cmder (close out of Desktop Manager during this process.) You will then end up with a white screen with small icons and an error code number like 507 or 543.

If you end up with a white screen with small icons and the number 507/543 (which happens occasionally during an upgrade process,) simply connect to DM again and run application loader again and it should load the OS to the device. You will lose your 3rd party apps if this happens. You can prevent this if you have a current 3rd party app "backup." Learn how to backup 3rd party apps here

Edited Blackberry.alx and LBS.alx's can be found here

(link to previous OS sticky thread click here)

Just wondering why one would need to delete the vendor.xml file?

The vendor.xml file needs to be deleted in order to install on another carrier's device. Don't worry, you lose nothing by deleteing it. You only gain the ability for Desktop Manager to load the OS to your device.

Welcome to the forums hemertwv,

Your 8100 reports 4.2.1.94 not 4.2.194

The OS in this thread is newer.

Default Doesn't ALWAYS re-connect to the network... - 08-30-2007, 03:11 PM

When the older (.103 was it?) upgrade was available, I upgraded. At that point after successfully upgrading, I was having a problem with my Pearl reconnecting to the network; showing "edge" instead of "EDGE" under the signal indicator after I turn the phone off then back on again.

I've since upgraded to .107 but still the same problem, albeit less frequently than before.

Basically, what happens is when I turn-off my phone then turn it back on, everything returns to normal except my network connection is not fully complete. Signal indicator will show fine, but the "edge" will appear instead of the "EDGE."

The only way to remedy this is to turn-off then turn-on again; or for a more surefire way to remedy, a hard reboot.

Anyone else getting this?

I know, I know, most BB users don't ever turn theirs off, but I do like to get a good couple hours sleep with it completely off.

Any ideas?

I believe lowercase 'edge' means that you have the data plan (internet and email etc.). It's in the pearl manual. check it out !

elmaalouf,
Welcome to the forums....

I believe the above poster already knows what edge means. He is having trouble getting a connection to EDGE with the new software. Sometimes it can be an issue.

Default still lagging on "edge" vs. "EDGE" - 08-30-2007, 08:45 PM

john clark, thanks yes you're right --i am looking to understand what is preventing my BB from reconnecting back to the data network.

just curious if anyone is having this same issue. to date, i've not been able to find a pattern -- for example, i thought it was because i use my alarm to turn-on my BB on some days; that wasn't the problem.

i then thought it was the way in which i turned-off my BB; whether by holding the end key or by scrolling to "turn off." still, no consistency.

so i'm back to square one. i've even left it to sit, on, with the "edge" and it hasn't remedied itself.

it's a small nuisance but something i'd love to get rid of if it is, indeed, a bug.

HELP! thanks!

oh and PS: elmaalouf, i know you were trying to help and youre right; that information is in the manual, but i do know what the lower case "edge" means vs. the upper case "EDGE." thanks anyway

Have you tried removing the battery and sim card and then rebooting? If you still have problems you should give TMo a call.

Default issues with 107 ??? - 08-30-2007, 09:52 PM

Hi folks, upgraded from .71 to .107 - everything went smoothly, thanks to John Clark - great post.

Here are my observed issues.

1. Seem to have some weird font issue - can't get back to my previous font - everything seems to be in italics for some weird reason and text is really tight- tried various options - just can't get back to what I had. Sadly, I appear to have lost the bold feature on new received emails (unopened)

2. Pearly (ball) seems to be slower than before, especially when selecting items - slight 2 seconds delay

3. Have lost my playlist in MultiPay - don't really know why, can't sem to rebuild it either ( I backed up everything along with 3rd party apps and reinstalled)

4. strangely, my old emails kept in the inbox all reappeared as new following the upgrade rather than keeping their original received date.

Tha's it for now. Might be longing for my old .71 os

Live everyday like its your last - no regrets !!!

Are you referring to the download page for the TMobile 8100 OS update in the first post? I just clicked on it and it went right though.

Yes, It's just stuck on this page, so is there any alternate site or another place I can download it from?

It seems to be working fine. It's likely an issue with your browser. Did you try clearing your temporary internet files? Also, popup blocker might be blocking it. You can also try T-Mobile but you'll need a TMo number to get through to the download page.

Thanks,

A temporary disable for Norton Internet Security resulted in me being able to see the Download button, it was not showing while security protection was active.

They just haven't released a newer version yet. You can run the Tmo version on your AT&T device. It doesn't change your device to TMo. It only loads the later OS version and you get to take advantage of the bug fixes included in the later OS versions.

Default Loss of data connection - 08-31-2007, 01:36 PM

Twice I have had the problem after the upgrade, same day (today), loss of data capability, had to remove the battery to clear, no clue as to what the cause was except I was in the browser when the problem occurred. I'm beginning to suspect the problem is beta testing via field upgrade.

After upgrading I also was stuck on lowe case edge. I fixed it by pulling the battery and the SIM card.

I fixed my emails by deleting and recreating the accounts in my t-mobile account. Not a very elegant solution but it worked just fine.

Still have problems with dropouts. I'll probably downgrade to .73 when I have a free evening.

Default install problem - 08-31-2007, 06:48 PM

I unpacked the new OS, ran it, removed the vendor.xml file. Started DM, plugged in the BB, had gone through the setup wizard, but shortly after clicking the "install", the installation failed with:

"A fatal error has occurred while updating your device's software. Please try again."

I killed DM, restarted it, and now I get a small pop-up window as soon as I connect USB cable into my BB:
- window title: "Email Settings"
- text: "A necessary application is missing from the device. Use the loader wizard to reinitialize the device"
- "ok" button.

Any ideas what could be causing this?

PROBLEM RESOLVED: a reboot by removing the battery got rid of this particular problem. The upgrade is underway. Still, if anyone has an idea as to the possible causes of the above problem, it would be interesting to hear.

my device is being upgraded to .107 as we speak, hopefully it works better than .64, which wasn't bad but was VERY sluggish and it was very inconsistent with it polling of my work email thru IMAP.

finished my .107 upgrade, all seems well so far, OS seems zippier than the .64 but that may just be that it's a fresh install and all the cache and such has been cleared. I'm not thrilled with the UI though where the changed the menu to the icons. Hopefully the issue of my LED indicator turning off randomly will cease in .107

Default T-mo "update" - 09-01-2007, 08:16 PM

I'm REALLY getting tired of having to throw in my negative 2 cents worth, but once again I put my trust into the hands of the people at RIM and T-Mobile only to get messed over one more time!

T-Mo pulled their previous version of their "new and improved" updated software to release this latest version. Once again I sat at my pc for a half an hour waiting for the download and installation to take place with hopes that it would fix the bugs that have been affecting my phone. But guess what people, upon trying to type my first sms I noticed that the problem with repeating letters is still VERY evident! And it's not my phone. I've sent in phones for exchange more than 5 times now for the simple fact that the people at T-Mo were unaware of the problem and thought that switching out phones was the answer!

I'm tired of RIM not taking the professional responsibility to fix such a major problem and T-Mobile for not checking it before releasing yet another poor version of software.

(Wasn't aware I could edit, thanks again John!)

Ricardo,
If you want to state your frustrations here that's fine but take the f-words out Please! Edit your post or I'll remove it.

PS....this was already stated in this thread. A simple read of the thread would have told you that the multitap issue has not been fixed. Learning to use SureType fixes the problem, too.

Sorry if I offended you or anyone else and yes my words were probably a bit too harsh. I should have looked at previous posts before spouting off at the mouth but by now, after NUMEROUS downloads, installations and re-installations of older software I wasn't thinking quite as clearly as needed. The fact of the matter is that I (we) pay more money on a monthly basis for this phone and services from RIM than most other phones on the market and I personally depend of them for a living as well. If our payment is late, they cut off our service and we are no longer able to use our phone. Why should we accept anything less than a functional phone! I don't think I'm out of line or am asking too much, just probably should have stated it with a touch more eloquence!

Thanks for the note John.

The multitap issue has been around since the beginning of 4.2.1. It's actually better than it was with the first release of 4.2.1. There is also a bluetooth stack issue that RIM has not addressed in 4.2.1 that was not in 4.2.0. I agree with you, both of these issues should have been fixed long ago but they're not. I've been disappointed in RIM's OS releases as well.

I've never experienced problems with T-mo's 4.2.0 multitap, what could have gone wrong when they "upgraded"? Anyhow, enough with the negative stuff on my part, let's hope that our input will at least help fuel them to get back to doing quality work and producing solid products. Ferrari doesn't send a car off the line without a gear shifter, why should Blackberry be any different!

I've been disappointed in RIM's OS releases as well.
