If you lost all your themes you did something wrong. The Blackberry.alx is not an "openable" .alx in Desktop Manager using "add." Simply replace your blackberry.alx file with the appropriate one from this thread:

http://www.blackberryforums.com/ring...-4-2-only.html

Then just connect the BB and run through application loader again all the way to the end. It will automatically add the themes.

The install went smoothly and flawlessly for me. the only qualm i have with this new release is that i can not silence my ringer without just completely rejecting the call. i used to be able to just roll the track ball up and down once and it would silence the ringer but not actually reject the call to voice mail. anyone else ???

Silencing the ringer with just a touch of the trackball was actually a bug they fixed in later OS revisions. People who had the device in their pockets wouldn't ever hear a ring because the trackball rolled.

You should be able to hit one of the up/down volume keys or the mute button on top of the device to silence the ringer.

I got it. I had skipped the last couple of updates so I was a little rusty. I put the blackberry.alx in with the vendor file instead of in the install directory. Thanks!

Okey dokey, I'm a Mac user but on an Intel machine so I can BootCamp into Windows. My Pearl arrived yesterday and is 4.2.1.75 - I realise that's quite an old OS but I wondered what the major differences are between it and this latest one and if I'll really experience a big improvement in anything in particular that would make it worth the effort?

Cheers!

If you're not having any problems with your current OS I recommend leaving it be.

Coolio - I wouldn't know what problems I might be having, though, as I'm so totally new to it.

Other than not being able to stop push email arriving when I'm at my computer and hence don't need it, the Pearl is the coolest, most wonderful gadget I've ever had!

Glad you like it. Leave your OS alone. IMO there haven't been any significant features in the new OS updates that make the pearl any better except that you can use a bigger SD card in them. I think you can use a 2gb in yours. You have to upgrade to use a 4gb card.

i had done a search for the error and the only similar problem i found was regarding google maps.

and now that i think about it, when the os updated and i was poking around seeing what had changed, it asked if i wanted to allow gmail or google maps (i know it was a google thing) access to the internet or something along those lines and i think i said no.

is there a way to change that option? looked at both gmail and google maps for an option to allow communication with the network, but didn't find anything (except in google maps to allow bluetooth connection).

if not, i'll just re-do the os upgrade (don't think i have a copy of the old os as this was the first time i updated it since i bought it.

You'll need to reset your Firewall prompts. Go to Options >Advanced Options >Applications. Highlight Google Maps with your cursor then push the menu button. Select "Edit Permissions." Then press the menu button again and select "Reset Firewall Prompts." That will reset the prompts for that application.

Thanks for all the help!

Now I have a follow up question. Didn't know whether to start a new thread or keep it with this one, so if a Mod wants to split this, feel free.

I got the dialog prompt that started the issue and it leaves me scratching my head:

Quote:
The application gm_8100_v4_0_L1 is attempting to access phone logs. Would you like to allow access?
...
Calling modules:
net_rim_bbapi_phonegm_8100_v4_0_L1
net_rim_cldc-4
gm_8100_v4_0_L1
Why would Gmail want/need access to the phone logs (I'm assuming the list of people I've call, etc.)?

Thanks!

It's fine. It's so that you can dial a number directly from the Google apps. It's not really accessing your phone logs it's accessing the phone app.

i just noticed that in the browser options under cache there is a button to clear passwords. This is new to me, it must have come over when i re-sent the service books. Is there an option that allows me to set a master password like in firefox ? Can anyone else confirm ? Running the latest tmo os.

That option has been there for quite a while. Don't even remember which OS upgrade it came with. It's not a service book option.

Make sure you have the latest version of Desktop Manager installed. It's 4.2 SP2. Download it here. (The version listed on the TMo site is quite outdated, I don't recommend using that one.)
when i go to that link i have the option of getting either the english version or multilanguage one. does that matter?

If you want the program in English only, just download the English version.

Do you have administrator privilges on the computer you are using? Basically, do you have permission to install software on the PC?

might have found a bug in this and the 4.2.1.68 OS as well...

i have a security pin and a SIM pin enabled. the security times out after 5 minutes or so. if you enter that wrong twice it asks you to type "blackberry" before trying a third time. and now while your on your third go at the password its not hidden by **** its being displayed. could be that on purpose or its just a comical bug..

I'm betting that's not a bug. If you've mistyped it twice they're giving you a little help.

The first post says this OS should work on any carrier, does it really mean ANY carrier ?!?
I'm in Argentina and my carrier is Telecom Personal. Will it work ?!?
If it doesn't work, is it possible to "downgrade" it to the last carrier's official OS release ?!? (4.2.0.67 :S)

Yes, it will work on Telecom personal.

Yes, you can downgrade if you desire.

Dave
There is no way I am having a network issue EVERY SINGLE DAY.

.107 is hosed

I keep getting disconnected the ICMP, BlackBerry Registration, PIN-PIN, and all of my BIS e-mail accounts.

I did a JL_CMDR wipe when I loaded .107.

I have since deleted and resent all of the service books.

I have pulled the battery umpteentrillion times.

I cannot be the only person having this problem.

If I were you I'd go back to version .64, which always worked for me. Version .107 is working for me, but no better than .64 did. Go back, go way back!

So do I! And I fly airplanes for a living!

Folks, Dave seems to know his stuff. I, for one, think it's great that these BB support people are frequenting our forum. It helps us here and it helps all those that call into them during the day. If all the BB support people were to frequent BBF then customer service would likely be raved about for these carriers. Just my $.02.

Kudos to Dave for all the help and info he's brought to the boards here.

Love the new version especially option that lets u keep screen at 100% brightness... and my speaker seems louder too for ringtones...but the only bad part and one that i need the most is the multi tap option is verrry sticky! horrible i try to type the second letter but the first letter would show twice... doesnt happen all the time but enough to make it very uncomfortable... anyone know a secret fix for this? or jus downgrade? thx

I can only based my opinions on my experiences and the experiences of the many folks I know using .107.

But you could be having software problems of course. (Never assume...)

Try reloading .107 and test. If that doesn't fix it, go back to .64 and test.

So you're going to lowercase gprs/edge? Where does this happen most often? Are you in any type of building? Driving somewhere?

So did I. No issues with .107 so far. Never had any with .64 either. Or any of the ones in between I tinkered with on my Pearl.

Make sure the phone is left on when pulling the battery. I speak to many people during the day who do a battery pull after turning the phone off which resets nothing.

The suggestions I make are just that suggestions. Use them or not. It's up to you. I spend 8 hours per day fixing Blackberry issues.

Dave
we had the same problem on ours with 107, it just wouldn't go to any data network, just gsm regardless of signal, ended up going back to 101

I noticed one difference between .107 and .64. Now when I play a playlist it plays in correct order on the card. With .64 it played in alphabetical order. I could never figure out why. I'd open it on the card it was fine. Play it, not fine.
