Default OS: 8100 (TMo) 4.2.1.175/4.2.1.107 - 08-23-2007, 12:00 PM

TMo has released 4.2.1.107 for the 8100 Pearl.

This OS will work on any Pearl, regardless of carrier.

Pkg v4.2.1.175 app v4.2.1.107 Plt v2.3.0.83

File name: 8100M_PBr4.2.1_rel168_PL2.3.0.83_A4.2.1.107.exe

Download the OS here

Instructions for loading this OS on ANY carrier's 8100:

Instructions for installing:
(Be sure to check out TMo's installation instructions at the download site.)

1. Make sure you have the latest version of Desktop Manager installed. It's 4.2 SP2. Download it here or from the TMobile site at the link above.
2. Download the above file to the PC then install it to the PC by running the file you downloaded.
3. Locate the vendor.xml file and delete it. It's located in c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader
4. Plug in BB and Open Desktop Manager. You should be prompted to upgrade.

The process takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much data you have to backup and restore during the process. Once it's done loading the new OS it will reboot (it may do this twice during the entire process.) You will see a white screen with an hourglass for up to 20 minutes at a time while the DM says "waiting for initialization." Don't unplug from the PC & Don't remove the battery unless the spinning hourglass has been there for 30 minutes or more. If the hourglass has been spinning for more than 30 minutes continuously you will need to wipe the device with JL_Cmder (close out of Desktop Manager during this process.) You will then end up with a white screen with small icons and an error code number like 507 or 543.

If you end up with a white screen with small icons and the number 507/543 (which happens occasionally during an upgrade process,) simply connect to DM again and run application loader again and it should load the OS to the device. You will lose your 3rd party apps if this happens. You can prevent this if you have a current 3rd party app "backup." Learn how to backup 3rd party apps here

Edited Blackberry.alx and LBS.alx's can be found here

I'm assumed you meant T-Mobile updated their software to 107. I'm downloading it now...Thanks for the heads up!

What else did it fix besides the multi-tap?

I've found no issues with Multi-tap with the .107 version.

Smooth install here. I wasn't having any trouble with .103 though. Still the grid menu. I hardly ever use multi tap but can now enter passwords very quickly with no mistakes so I guess they fixed that. There is a different IM icon than .103 had...I'm getting picture mail. Haven't noticed much else yet...

One of the smoothest installs i've ever encountered. Went through each step without having to wipe my phone in the middle.

Words of wisdom:
If using BBMAPS, you'll need to enter your APN value: wap.voicestream.com
Options > Advanced Options > TCP

If using an external GPS puck, set up the device to use under GPS
Options > Advanced Options > GPS

Aside from that, cool.

I can't find any issues with this new OS. The only thing I have left to try is the dropped bluetooth GPS connections. Haven't had a chance to try out TeleNav/Google yet with my puck in this version yet.

So far, this is the best 4.2.1 version to date. I recommend anyone running 4.2.1 on their Pearl (any carrier) can upgrade to this version in confidence.

I'm not 100 percent sure about your recommendation. I'm on AT&T. The upgrade went smoothly, the device activated on my company's BES no problem, BUT, since the upgrade, I'm stuck with only GSM coverage. I'm on the phone with AT&T right now. I did not have this problem with the .103.

I'll report back.

Interesting....I did have some issues like that after upgrading late last night but attributed it to just a TMobile data issue. I got EDGE but no data. I just attributed it to a TMo problem. It started working a little while later and It's been working fine all day today.

Same deal for me. I went back and forth between GSM and EDGE. I rebooted, reregistered, toggled wireless on and off, resent service books, etc.

While on the phone with AT&T support, EDGE came back, then back to GSM, finally back to EDGE. It's been on EDGE now for about 45 minutes, with no problems.

In any event, I agree with your earlier assessment -- so far, this seems like the best 8100 OS yet.

Anyone else having a problem where they can't copy and paste? Seems kind of odd, but I it just wont let me highlight characters since I updated.

And yes I am in Edit mode and I hold down the key in the bottom left and click the trackball. I know the key and the trackball work because they both do their normal functions.

Anyone, anyone?

Yeah I just rebooted for the hell of it and its fine now. In all my years using a BB and through all these Pearl updates, I have never seen that so I automatically assumed it was an issue with the OS.

Thanks.

I've always wondered this - is it better to wipe the handheld before doing an OS upgrade? Personally I never have and was wondering if there are benefits or not?

Second question then is I assume all applications would need to be reloaded as well correct?

I have read a lot of opinions that its better, but I personally don't do that. To
much extra time IMO. So yes you have to resintall, which is what makes it take longer.

I've never wiped the device before an OS upgrade and have not had any ill-effects. The loading process actually wipes it during the upgrade. I've seen the 507 screen during the process before, so I'm not sure just what the benefit would be.

If you backup your data first you can restore it when you're done. However, that doesn't include any 3rd party apps you have installed. So, you will lose those unless you back those up separately. I just posted instructions for that in a sticky in the RIM Software forum and they'll soon be in the FAQ's.

So, if you restore your data, and restore your 3rd party apps, what is different than just letting the device upgrade normally?

Good point - I have never wiped either, but figured I would ask opinions before I load .107 on the device... thanks

What bug? The doubling letters problem doesn't happen anymore on my device. I never use multitap but was well aware of the problem. Go to screen keyboard and change key rate to slow. Works fine for me.

Way to go T-mobile and RIM.

I was one of the "dropped call" users on anything above 4.2.0.73. I've already made/received a few calls with the new OS. No problems at all. Plus, the install was very easy.

Hope everyone else with a similar situation as me can finally feel good about this phone. What a difference.

IMO, I think it's a good OS. I'd recommend it for any Pearl user...any carrier.

I agree with John that this may be the best OS yet. Multi-tap dialing works now for the first time in many updates. The OS just seems overall very responsive. I didn't have any problems with .103 but I think that I'm addicted to upgrading So far all is good.

Upgraded and lost my fav's... resent service books and nothing. Edited one of the names online and it came back yet without any of my contacts.

Anyone else experience this?
