You must have a data plan for PIN to PIN.... The person you are going to PIN must also have a data plan....

PIN to PIN is free so to speak if you have a data plan.... SMS costs and IM costs.... Half dozen of one and a dozen of the other.....

Many on BES are restricted and can't use IM or SMS but can use PIN to PIN if that makes sense...

Wirelessly posted (8700g: BlackBerry8700/4.2.1 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/100)

Another point, or points, about PIN, since it is handset to handset, it is a backup in case email servers go down. And I believe there is a size limit on text messages, 140-150 characters?

Also, the pin message is instant (whereas most emails are delayed up to 15 minutes) and even gives you a delivery report so you know whether or not the message made it to the recipients handheld. The small "D" above the check mark indicates it delivered to the handheld.

Yea you have to have the plan but even with the plan you still have to buy a text plan to not get charged for each text message.

Neat little feature they do for BB user to talk to each other. IMAO.

You do not need an sms plan to send Pin messages or to use BBmessenger.

If your service provider is T Mobile, they've just released a new OS .107, which allows you to send bb messanger messages even if you don't have a data plan.

You'll need to upgrade your OS, but it isn't difficult.

If you need help upgrading your OS you might go to http://www.blackberryforums.com/gene...2-1-107-a.html and read the threads there on how to upgrade.

What??? I don't think so. Do you mean you can use the OZ Instant Messenger program without a data plan?

Blackberry Messenger uses pin to pin which requires a Blackberry Data Plan.

Blackberry Messenger uses pin to pin which requires a Blackberry Data Plan.
Per T-Mobile, list of new features on OS .107:

1. Redesigned Application list that is displayed when you press the Menu key from the Home screen.
2. Improved quality and reliability of the audio experience during phone calls.
3. Improved two-way audio experience.
4. Ability to use t-zones browser, Instant Messaging and Picture Messaging for all customers (additional charges may apply).
5. Improved persistence of Call Logs and Messages.
6. Ability to use t-zones browser, Instant Messaging and Picture Messaging for all customers (additional charges may apply)
7. Improved consistent behavior of the ABC indicator.
8. Improved stability when using a Bluetooth headset.
9. Improved reliability of myFaves icon appearance.
10. Improved reliability of keyboard lock feature.
11. Daylight Savings Time Patch Integration.

And I'm sure the "additional charges may apply" is for Instant and Picture messaging, NOT PIN.

By the way, sorry for linking to another board (didn't know it was verboten), but as a Mod, you miight double check your info, before stating that what I or someone else posts is incorrect.

A simply trip to T-Mobile's website would have shown you that the new OS DOES allow bb messenger for users who do NOT have a data plan.

Shel, please BOLD for me where it says you may use PIN messaging for free, without a Data Plan?

Nothing you posted above refers to PIN messaging, it refers to Instant Messaging, which is probably referenced to OZ, which uses SMS, which will incur additional charges, as you mentioned.
