Wink Pearl 8100 Trackball not moving to the Right - 08-31-2007, 11:47 PM

Hi all,

I have had a frustrating time over the last month where the track ball won't move to the RIGHT.

So as a last resort I gently removed the Trackball assembly from the front of the keypad.

Disassembled the trackball assembly to find it totally full of dust and fluff obviously from pocket of shirt.

Cleaned and reassembled.

All good again.

Allow at least half an hour and plenty of patience with the little magnetic rollors.

Mark.

If it's that dirty then the disassembly was a good idea. However, usually if the trackball stops moving in one direction the fix is to press the trackball and move in the direction that isn't working in order to dislodge whatever is preventing it from working. Sometimes this needs to be done several times.

Thanks John,

We are talking large bits of fluff covering the full roller.

yep....I've seen it. That's why I thought the disassembly was a good idea. Just providing extra info for the next person searching and coming across this thread.

I am recently gonna have to take out my trackball to clean behind it also. Glad to hear of another success at this to bring up my spirits.

I've got this same problem right now. Except I work as a big rig/crane mechanic and I bet its got some grit or some other foreign object in or under it. This happened on my pearl before this one except it was scrolling down that didn't work. Guess i'll try disassembly on this one soon.

Thank you John. I was dreading the prospect of having to dissasemble my Pearl but your recommendation worked like a charm. Thanks!

Removing and cleaning the trackball is actually a very simple process. Just be very careful and follow all the directions that are posted. There are several very good link with pictures showing the process. Good luck!

To the posted with the "grit" I would highly recommend compressed air in the cavity where the trackball assembly resides after removing it.

You can remove the trackball, but then you wear the small plastic pins on the outer chrome ring. Pretty soon the ring doesn't stay on very well.

As far as the compressed air, you can do that too. However, RIM's published fix for the dirt/lint in the trackball is the push and roll method.

But with the assemblies down to $9.99 you can just throw a new one at it every couple of months! And it's so nice to see a bright white trackball!!!

i did too! But what is scarey is that I would have done it again if the price didn't drop! There are a few of us at the office that have Pearls and it was so embarrasing to place mine on the table in a meeting and look around the other devices on the table...some with bright shiney clean trackballs and the others including mine with varying shades of brown and black! Since I replaced mine I can smuggly place mine on the table for all to envy!
