Default explain the difference between EDGE and edge, GSM and gsm please?

Please Login to Remove!

sorry if this has been posted before - i couldn't find the answer anywhere under the FAQ or in a search.

what's the difference between EDGE and edge when the phone shows what network is showing? today i noticed that my emails were not popping up on my BB pearl, and the right upper area of the screen showed "edge" in lower case, which i'd not seen before. i reset the phone using softreset, and when it restarted it said "EDGE" in uppercase, and suddenly it started working again.

i know someone previously mentioned that the difference has something to do with messaging capabilities, but can anyone explain why this might happen?

thanks

In a very small nutshell...

GSM = Phone only. No data netowrk available.
gprs = Phone, carrier data network available, but not authenticated to RIM for BlackBerry services. (No BB email, web or PIN messaging.)
GPRS = Phone, Data, BlackBerry services are available
edge = same as gprs, but faster data.
EDGE = same as GPRS, but faster data.

It'll switch to edge when you're in an area with no BlackBerry data support. Maybe roaming on a different carrier. Could just be something wrong on the carrier's end.
It happens.
Should switch back to EDGE on its own, without you doing anything.
Sometimes a battery pull will simply speed that process along.

Mine was on edge yesterday too. I think TMO had issues.
