Hello all, I'm new to this forum so plesase forgive me if this has been posted and discussed before.

I just got my brand new BlackBerry Pearl in the mail two days ago, having ordered it through AT&T's website. Well three problems are evident already.

Problem 1. The screen dims and brightes when in use like if im texting or for any thing for that matter.

Problem 2. When I hook the usb cable up to the BlackBerry to the pc I get this message on my phone ''USB charging current is not sufficent. Verify that your handheld is connected to a USB charging source and that the proper usb driver is installed.''

Problem 3. When I insert the disk that came with the phone, the computer doesnt read the disk at all.

Anyone out there can help?

Hi and welcome to the forums / pearl.

One way to solve the CD problem would to just download the software from att. I know with tmo you can download the latest version from their site. As I recall the desktop manager and user guide is all that is on the CD.

As for the usb problem it sounds like you are pulling to much power. If you are plugged into a hub try plugging into the computer. If you are plugged into the computer you are drawing to much power on other devices to charge the phone.

1. The screen dims and brightens because of an ambient light sensor in near the led at the top of the BB. It's normal.

2. The message about charging current is because you don't have the drivers installed for charging the BB. Once you install desktop manager to your PC the BB will charge off of your PC.

3. This is due to how your computer is setup. Autorun has likely been disabled on the CD drive. You should be able to explore the contents of the cd by going to my computer and right clicking on your D:/ drive (or whatever drive has the cd in it) and clicking explore. Look for the Desktop Manager setup.exe program. Double click on that and it should install to your computer. You can also download the desktop software from here: BlackBerry - BlackBerry - Sys Req V4-2 Pack 2

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8700/4.2.1 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/100)

USB port needs to be 2.0 or a powered usb port!

As far as disk being read not a big deal you can download DESKTOP manager from carriers website or RIMs website. Actually probably on BBF here somewhere.

Won't charge from USB until Desktop manager is loaded, needs the drivers!

As far as the screen dimming just got my pearl so I'm not sure if that is normal or not

Thanks for the help. The explore option didn't work, the computer wont read the disk at all. So I'm downloading the software. Atleast I hope I'm downloading the right one. When I clicked on the link you provided, I was taken to a drop box that asked me to please select a product. I selected the BlackBerry Desktop Software v4.2 Service Pack 2. So I hope I'm downloading the right one. Quick question..........What is the software for anyway?

The desktop software lets you do countless things. Backup information on your device, restore data, sync with Outlook or Lotus, manage media, add or delete programs, update software...lots! It's better that you are downloading the software from RIM anyway because carriers don't always give you the most recent version available.
