Default Auto keypad lock - 12-15-2006, 10:42 AM

Is it true that there is no auto key lock on the pearl?
Is there any 3rd party software available to do it, this is definitely 1 thing that might put me off getting this device

there is no auto key lock. You push and hold the * key and it locks the keypad. You can set it up to require a password after a set period of time, though.

Can someone tell me once the Pearl is locked is there anyway in which you can unlock the phone without having to hit the * and talk key? If so, how do you set that up? Thanks

If it's allowed by IT policy or if there is no IT policy on your phone you can go to Options >Security Options >General Settings and set Allow Outgoing calls While Locked to Yes. Other than that there is no other way into to the phone.

I know on the 7130e, you could use the trackwheel to unlock, on the Pearl the trackball takes you to * and Send, I can't believe they didn't make an easier way to unlock the keypad.

Yes, that is a known issue. Jibi posted a thread a couple months ago about getting everyone to send an email to RIM about changing it. It's assumed that they did that on purpose because they think we might unknowingly unlock it while it's in a pocket. For most people it's an annoyance. I rarely lock mine so it doesn't bother me that much. If I can find the original post I'll link it here.

Edit: Found it-- http://www.blackberryforums.com/gene...=keyboard+lock

There is now.

http://www.geekandproud.net/blackber...k/autolock.jad

On the install, you have to run it, and it will appear that nothing happens. It will just exit, and not show up in the application switcher, but it's running. It will autorun on startup, so you only have to do that the when you first install.

My eventual plan is to not have an icon at all, and just have an enable/disable in the options menu.

Anyone wanna play with this and test it out?

After installed is there an icon? Can you turn it off, if desired? And can you set your own time limit?

1. Yes, but I want to get rid of it, and just have stuff in the options menu.

2. No, not yet, but that'll be in a future version. The only way to disable it is to delete it (or maybe, in application permissions, not let it do things)

3. It automatically activates the keyguard when the backlight turns off, so it uses that timeout.

Works as advertised! Great job! It does autolock while still allowing outgoing calls while locked. I'm ok with the timer as is, but would be nice to to be able to set it to a different time or backlight timer, as desired. Having an option somewhere to just turn it on and off would be great.

Great little app! Can you write one to do a restart? That's been a big complaint too....especially with Seidio case users. See...give us a little we want MORE!

Nice job.

Unfortunately, it looks like a restart app is actually going to be somewhat hard. A workaround: reinstall AutoLock OTA, it'll ask you to reboot.

Not surprising. Nobody's been able to (or wanted to spend the time on) making it. It's just as easy to pop the battery. It would just be a "nice to have" not any kind of necessity.

I have found one problem using the auto lock. When you take a picture the 8100 auto locks. Mildly annoying, but I don't use the camera much so I will probably keep the auto lock.

Ohhh no! Big bug. Snap a picture-- the screen goes dim and the BB locks. Unlock BB, hit escape to get out of the camera mode and it forces a reboot every time.

Metsfan, can you fix it? If not, then may be we have a reboot app after all!!

John
