I have been using this model for about a day and am enjoying it. I do like the bigger keys and the flip form factor. I am happy...for now...

I've got one, I like it a lot.

It fits in the hand really well, and the hinge design that curls around behind allows the phone to 'perch' nicely on your index finger. This also seems to position your thumb really well to drive the trackball, which is closer to the hinge than the navigator on other flip devices.

The preview on the outside display is super cool, saves people from having to obviously flip open the device in meetings to check what that buzz was about.

It looks great, the black finish on the top is stylish. It's forensics department's dream, picking up fingerprints from 5 feet away, but wipes off easily.

It's a super-light device, which is why many folks might say it feels cheap, but it doesn't flex or creak at all.

I like mine too, the only thing is (and i worry about this with all flip phones) is the hinge. It feels soo flimsy, but knowing it to be a blackberry, my worries are most likely for nothing. It is super light, as KeyLoveMobile said, and sometimes it doesnt feel like a phone in your hand at all. A bit sluggish, but you get used to it. All in all, i really like it (coming from a curve ->iPhone -> iPhone 3g -> Kickstart.)

Several of you have mentioned a sluggish response time. Has anyone quantified this with a stop watch? I'm curious to know how severe it is.

I have 8220 and like it. In fact, I gave away my Bold to get Pearl Flip. No more belt clips for me, I can carry this thing in my pocket.

After two days with Pearl I looked at coworker's Bold and commented: how huge Bold looks in comparison. I need email, I don't need HDTV on my belt.

its not doing well. customers dont seem to like it. no one at works seems to like it either. G1 is pretty much the focus right now. For anyone to want it, they need to drop it to $49. Too many cool phones in that price category that consumers are wanting vs same BB in a different shell.

V4.6.0.174 improves the sluggish operation of the 8220 considerably. I'm fairly happy with .174 except UMA doesn't reliably handoff calls to EDGE.

It's all on preference. For me, I never had a smartphone until I got the blackberry pearl and i loved that phone!

Now with the blackberry filp, it's basically an updated version of the pearl, plus more capabilities, and also flips so it's more comfortable to talk on.

I'm not one of those people who needs all these super amazing features (GPS, 3G, Wi-Fi, touch screen, etc.). I just want a phone that works well and something I can use as an organizer/planner as well. The flip is that and MUCH more!

It's my favorite phone on the market right now and I couldn't see myself with any other phone.

Could you expand a bit on your ability to browsed the internet without a BB Data Plan? Also, any UMA issues?

I am thinking of getting the 8220 for the Wi-Fi feature. I have the 8700g for two years and inherited a 8100. What is the memory size for the 8220?

I believe it is 128mb. The one I have (with very little loaded) shows 79mb free. I guess it could be 96mb.

Bought the 8220 from Costco on TMO with no data plan. If you change the default browser from T-Mobile to HotSpot/WiFi it allows you to get to web pages using wifi. Everything else seems to be blocked (IM, gmail app, google maps). I can download these apps, but then I can't use them. Called TMO and they confirmed that you can use the browser, but that the ports are blocked for the other stuff.....stupid. Anyone found a way around that?

Other then that, it is a great device.

I have the flip and I love it. Or to be more precise, all my friends love it as I have called several of them accidentally from my previous blackberry pearl with no flip. The cover is awesome.

What TMO told you is not scientific explanation.

Blackberry data plan is RIM and TMO services you are paying for, including: connection to RIM through TMO cell network, use of RIM's BIS system to send and receive emails, use of RIM's browsing to browse the Internet, use of RIM's IM servers to, well, IM. I guess you've got the point.

So, no data plan - no carrier or RIM services. WiFi browser goes to Internet direct, without touching and taxing RIM's and TMO's infrastructures.

Same for the rest of blackberry applications - find those that can utilize WiFi without utilizing RIM's infrastructure - and they will work on your 8220.

In some cases you may have to find how to configure application to use WiFi. For example, I am pretty sure Google Maps and GMail App are not using RIM's services, but they might not know you want them to use WiFi and instead they try to connect through TMO network - which fails, of course.

So, there are no ports blocked - just access to RIM and TMO services is. It also is not stupid - you are getting what you are paying for.

So you get browse the net without having an internet plan using wi-fi if you just change your default browser? And do they charge you when you change it to hotspot?

Yeah...that somewhat makes sense...I will fiddle with the installed gmail/gmaps to see if I can get it working. The stupid part I was also upset about but failed to mention was that you can't add a pay-per-use data plan like AT&T. I don't use data when I am outside the house enough to justify 20-25$ a month.

Yeah...depending on the device it will be either hotspot or wifi browser. You have to change it in settings->options->advanced->browser and also in the browser itself i think. I don't have a data plan, so I don't know how they could charge me anything additional, and the tech didn't indicate that. I will certainly follow up if my next bill shows anything.

Hello. I have had my 8220 for about 5 days now and have experienced two issues. I changed the theme to precision silver from precision t-mobile. tried changing it back, but could not get it to revert all the way. certain features of precision t-mobile came back, but not the color. I wound up wiping it clean and starting over. fixed the issue, color came back. also, developed a sim card error yesterday, powered off and back on and problem fixed. anyone know if these issues have been reported and if i should be worried? thanks, robert.

I have been using it for a couple of weeks and love it. I have data plan and have wifi at home and office. It shows UMA on the screen. I thought that if it shows UMA on screen, all your calls will not be charged but when i checked the minutes used, it shows up in the minutes. Is there anything i have to do to get the free calls originating from UMA?

I was at a T-Mobile storefront over the weekend. I liked the 8220 more before I saw it in person and handled it - I just think it looks weird when it's open. The reps there didn't even seem to like it that much, and steered more people toward the Curve, believe it or not.

Welcome to BBF . ..

Calls will not be charged against your callling minutes only if you subscribed to the @Home plan . . . otherwise, all calls outside of T-mobile-to-T-mobile and Nights & Weekends gets deducted from your plan minutes.

As I have stated in my previous post, I used to have a Bold, so when I switched to the Flip...some folks thought I was crazy to "downgrade" to the Flip. But I absolutely love it, the size is perfect for me, the keyboard is easy to use and the ringtones/alerts are LOUD even though I have set everything to low. The screen display is great (of course the Bold has a sharper screen) but for my needs, the Flip is more than adequate.
It is truly a nice sized blackberry device.

I wonder if AT&T will get it? I currently have an 8110 and love it. I am hoping for a next generation candybar Pearl with the same updates that the Flip has. I did not like the Flip at first, but now it's starting to grow on me. I was a long time Razr user. I did hear that the flip is goofy looking and awkward to use when flipped open. I may have to go into a T-Mobile store and play with a Pearl Flip just for sh*ts and giggles.

They'll eventually have an 8200 series but not necessarily an 8220. The 8220 has wifi for UMA which AT&T doesn't use (UMA)

I have had the flip since the day that it came out. I have not had any issues with it. Its great love the light weight, size and the flip. No issues with wi-fi or uma. I don't have the data plan and have not seen a need for it as there is wi-fi just about everywhere that I go. no additional charges have been added to my bill. Overall extremely satisfied. mp3 player works great and will pause if you have a phone call and will restart when call is over.

Oh yeah, I'm on TMO

I recently got the 8220. Also a new bb user. I switched from a m RZR.
I have to have built-in screen protection...I'm a remodel contractor.
Compared to the motorola RZR, the Flip top articulation out the back (i feel) is ingenious as it allows the device to rest easily in one hand, basically "hanging" on my index finger...brilliant.
It did feel a little cheap/light/frail when I started on it... everything seems fine at this point.
I am disappointed in the battery life. I can barely/occasionally make two days on a charge, only if I disable wifi and blue tooth sometimes.

You need to add the Unlimited Wi-Fi calling feature to your account, this is an additional $9.99 per month, then all calls initiated over Wi-Fi(UMA) will not count against your mins.

A friend of mine absolutely loves her Flip, and from what I am hearing her husband is seriously considering one too.

So Flip is doing well from what I see here, just give it a bit more time for a wider adoption.

Default 8220 Pearl Flip - 01-10-2009, 08:40 AM

Just bought it a couple of weeks ago. Very happy with it. Just wish I could delete those stupid preloaded photos.

exactly how I felt and I was coming from a curve. I was sold on this BB when I went out the night I got it and was able to carry a tiny clutch bag and fit my keys/phone/money pouch in it. I hadn't been able to carry that bag since before I got the 8800 over a year and a half ago. the suretype is way easier than I thought it would be, and the larger keys work well with my man hands.

its also way faster than my curve-I haven't been getting the lag people are talking about.

I don't know how well its doing, but anyone who wants a BlackBerry "lite" would be well served to get one.

I sent back my pearl 8120 (continued to shut on and off) and I have ordered the 8220! When I called T-Mobile they said they had just lowered the price to $99-$89 (forgot exactly) But it was almost the same price I purchases the pearl for! I am so excited and get it tomorrow! Atleast the price has come down!
