Is the Pearl 8220 Flip doing well? -
10-23-2008, 09:43 PM
I have not seen a single person with this device aside from one coworker who was given one at a conference. While this might not seem significant, to me it is, as I work for the very company that offers it! I am based in Atlanta right now and I want to know if the device is more popular in other areas.
I really like it and have one on the way, fortunately I don't have to pay for it, but was wondering if it is something that those of you who already have it are enjoying. Once the novelty wears off is it really a useful BlackBerry?

I have one. Love it. Once people see it, they are interested.
The fact that you don't see a device that has been out for less than one week is not really significant, right?

I know quite a few people who don't like it simply because of how that piece sticks out the back once its open. Shallow if you ask me, but it is an existing cosmetic issue.

You get used to it. It's a great BlackBerry. President of one of our divisions (and his admin) got them today. That certainly will increase the number of people who follow along and get them...

UMA works great.
Device has not so much as burped since I got in all of 4 days ago.
So far, very stable. Haven't had to restart it unless I wanted to.
And our 16 year old daughter got hers tonight and LOVES it - so it certainly will work in the consumer market. Took her all of 15 minutes to get it customized.

How is it with memory? Have you needed to do any battery pulls because of that matter?

I never seemed to have leaky memory (which means I wasn't running the programs that leaked).
Right now - and all I did was remove the IM programs I don't need - it has 66,837,321 bytes free. Yep - 66mb. Out of 128

Man, I'm jealous. I wish I had stuck it out with my silly 8800 for a little bit longer because I really did have my eye on this device.
Oh well, I'll keep it in mind for a future phone. Glad to hear that it's doing so well!

Mine works well -
10-24-2008, 10:54 AM
I received my flip on Tuesday. I haven't had any issues with it so far. The only complaint I have is with the speakerphone. I cannot close the phone while it is on speaker without disconnecting the call. There is probably a setting somewhere, haven't had time to dig into the settings yet. It fits in my pocket nice, sometimes smaller is better. A lot of people at work are just now getting them.

i think the $149 price it too much considering you can buy an iPhone for $199. once the pearl flip his $49, it should sell great.

Got delivery of 5 Flips 2 days ago... 2 of the 5 have been deployed... played with one for a day and found it very usable, something I can get used to....Speakerphone is extra crisp . . has a nice light weight . . . about the same size as a VZW-Mot W385 and TMO Mot W490... easily connected to WiFi and used UMA calling. . . browsed internet without BB Data plan with a little APN tweak...
Overall: 4 stars out of 5

The wife has hers and other than UMA being kind of flaky, she loves it. She gets a little tweaked when I put my hands on it and start tinkering with it. She is now evangilizing the merits of the Blackberry Flip and Blackberries in general.

Just curious about your broadband speed resulting in flaky UMA . . . were you on DSL? . . . I do get flaky UMA on my 8820 at certain hotspots, but get very decent VOIP when connected to cable broadband . . .

I have cable internet, but the speed or type of internet isn't really the issue. I have an 8320 that uses UMA just fine with no issues whatsoever. I have a Linksys WRT54G router running DD-WRT that works just fine. The 8220 connects to the router, but would occasionally drop back to EDGE for no reason and then reconnect. Also, when on UMA, the wife had a couple of dropped calls. She does NOT like that! So, I turned her UMA off and the issues went away. That is why I am presuming that the UMA just isn't working well with this build.

It just seems like such a lackluster launch I guess. We had a contest on the run up to its launch that enabled many of our reps to win one based on the number of sales. Well, I did and it will be a few more weeks before it will be delivered. Now, we were all under the impression that the contest would be a good idea because it would get people interested in the device and we would be able to have our hands on it at launch...heck, maybe there'd even be a commercial or special signs and advertisements. Nothing.
It just seems like someone majorly dropped the ball on this one...and it keeps happening with one device after another. Am I wrong on this one? I have only seen one of our reps sell one at this point!

Presuming you work for T-Mobile in either Atlanta or Chicago, here in Colorado Springs, I was going to make a sales rep very happy by buying one for the wife. But, as soon as he pulled my account, he said "Sorry, I can't help you here. You need to call in to order the phone". I am on the government plan. Anyways, after the warehouse shipped the wrong phone to me (8820 instead of 8220), the CSR said that I was the 15th person that had the mis-shipment problem...and this was about 3 days after it's release. So, I don't think it is a lack of "sellability" for the phone, I just don't think many people have seen it yet. My wife says that everyday she uses it, someone asks her what it is. They are all impressed.

My impression was that because they were launching it on Tmobile exclusively, they did not want to advertise because of its launch being in such close proximity to the launch of the G1.

From MY experience with the wife's 8220, I had given her my Pearl because I couldn't use the SureType keypad well. But, with her 8220, I don't have that problem. I can use her phone with no problems since the buttons are much larger.

I hated Suretype.
But the 8220 is different. The keys are larger. The spacing is better. The word detection is better.
I am surprised - and I am sticking with the 8220.

Happened to me. I'd about had it with my Curve... I went from a regular cell phone to a 7100t to a 8100 to a Curve... I could NOT adjust to the Curve. I hated the keys, I fat fingered them all the time, I had to type with my finger nails, and I just felt it was bulky... plus the phone shut off whenever I so much as set it down on the desk, dropped it, or held it wrong. Ech.
So I ordered the 8220 and got the 8100. Called them, got the most inexperienced rep, EVER, who told me a new one had shipped. 24 hours later still no confirm, had not shipped. Canceled that order and went and bought it at the TMO store, just in time to go on vacation.
I'm a klutz to the 10th power and my curve would not have survived the trip. I bumped, dropped, and fumbled this phone on an airplane, in a restaurant, in my friend's kitchen-- it took a lickin' and kept on tickin.
I'm majorly in love with it, as are my friends. Too bad they're on At&T. Teehee!
My favorite feature is the clock on the front with notification of new emails, texts and BBIms without having to open the phone. I love that it is small and light and I missed Sure type so hard!!! Having to type an ENTIRE WORD.... so TAXING! *wipes brow*
So I said all that to say.... it's alright.

The three concerns I have from reading reviews of it (and I have switched between 8100, 8120, Curve 8310 and Bold - which I am currently using) are the reports that:
(a) it is cheap feeling (particularly by comparison to something like the Bold);
(b) it is huge; and
(c) it is laggy.
Any thoughts from those who've been using it would be much appreciated as the flip factor does really appeal to me.

From the wife:
1. No
2. No
3. No
Translation:
A. After having a Pearl and Curve, it does seem to be more...plasticky...but doesn't feel cheap. I was concerned about the cheap perception, but it feels much more durable than I expected.
B. The reason she wanted the flip was for the smaller formfactor when folded. When opened, it is bigger than the Pearl. When closed, it is slightly smaller than the Pearl.
C. OS 4.6 seemed laggy for the first 24 hours, but now, it keeps up with my Curve running OS 4.5.0.93. It doesn't seem laggy to me.

Thanks for the translation!
that's actually very helpful - the Curve is slower than the Bold sure (not surprising given the processor difference) but is more than acceptable to me.

I think when reading reports like that it's also important to remember that even though they are both BlackBerrys, the Bold and the 8220 are on different ends of the spectrum.
