I am thinking about switching to T Mobile from Verizon Wireless and purchasing a BlackBerry. I am not really interested in paying the $30 a month for the data plan and I have two questions. (1) Is a data plan mandatory for a BlackBerry Pearl Flip on T Mobile? (2) If a data plan is not mandatory, is there any way for me just to have the BlackBerry Messenger Service enabled, and not the email and web, leaving me paying a much a cheaper fee?

Thanks

No, but no.

You do not need a data plan with T-Mobile and a Blackberry. Unfortunately you will not have any of the services that make a Blackberry a Blackberry. If you're not going to get the right data plan there are much better choices for T-Mobile. You can use the Nokia E71 on TZones and get your email (but not push email). No Blackberry Messenger without a bond fide Blackberry data plan. It's just not gonna happen.

Default T-Mobile & Blackberry

You don't need the data plan for the phone but if you would like to get features to work then you will need a data plan. You can access the internet for free if you change your browser to a hotspot browser.
