Default T-Mobile, Blackberry Curve, and EDGE

Please Login to Remove!

I bought a Blackberry Curve this weekend, without a data plan. I figured since my college campus was almost completely wireless, I wouldn't need it. Well, I found there were some dead spots, like my room, where I have no WiFi coverage. However, when I was messing with my Curve (it's fantastic!), I found that I could use applications which would normally require a data plan without an active connection. I can bring up the web browser and browse to a limited amount of sites (I say limited, because I can go to any site that are in my bookmarks). I can also use the Gmail App, Google Maps, Blackberry Maps, and the Facebook App-all without a Wifi connection. Now, I figure this has to be using EDGE, which I previously thought to be subscription only. I checked my e-bill on T-Mobile.com, and it reports nothing, so I don't believe I'm being charged extra. Anyone want to help clue in a clueless Blackberry newbie?

Welcome to the Forums!

Sounds great you're getting much of what you want without the Data Plan. It is unlikely you will get charged for the data, but keep checking your online bill for now to make sure.

Good luck.

Thanks for the PM...doesn't make sense that the feature enabler let you use Gmail app, Google Maps, Blackberry Maps, etc.
I had that on my device....at least it was showing up on my account(free), but I was not able to access any of those programs.

The reason a lot of those sites work is probably because they are in the cache. It is most likely old data from the last time you connected to the internet

Timmy, thank you, but what is held in the cache is not issue here. The cache would only hold old pages one had been to, not new ones.

Except I was actively able to send an e-mail from GMail app (without a Wifi connection) and have it appear in my sent mail folder a few moments later...not to mention I was able to upload a photo to facebook, from the phone :/

Well...it's not working now. I noticed that the entire network near my dorm was down last night-I suppose they were doing some maintainence work. I can't seem to connect from my dorm room anymore :( So long edge, it was nice having you

Thank you Jsanders.... my problem is not the actuall Web....I can search that just fine with Wifi...my problem is Java apps like Gmail, BB Maps, Google Maps, etc. Applications like those for some reason will not run on my BB with just a wifi connection like some other are able to do. This is what I am trying to figure out how they do.

Most 3rd party apps dont work right just on WIFI due to the fact they were developed and written mostly for older models that didnt have wifi as a possibility. The connection properties of EDGE and wifi are very different, and there is alot of complication that goes with that. SOME can get them to work, but as a general rule, apps that are older and made principly for the pearl or other NON wifi phones, wont work in areas with JUST wifi connectivity. Generally.

I understand what you are saying...but I am talking about Gmail app and Google Maps... which others in this forum are getting to work on their BB8320 over wifi with no data plan....this is what I am trying to get working on mine. I am not trying to use older applications or apps built for the Pearl. Same ones other are using with the same phone that I am.
