im getting 8310 tomorrow from at&t. they said the gps service would cost me about $10/month. but i read on this forum that gps is free and is using with other map service instead of telenavs. is this true?

would the gps work with google maps porgram? thx in advance.

GPS is absolutely free. well, sorta, your taxes technically pay for it but theres nothing more than that. download google maps and you are ready to go!

cool thx! i just wasn't sure that i had to pay for gps or not. kinda misleading that the at&t ad said the 8130 only support the telenavs software and it would cost me an additional $10/month.

Telenav does cost $10 per month, but you don't need to use it unless you want the best GPS navigation software on your BlackBerry.
Nothing even compares to it, IMO.

Google Maps and BB Maps are both free, but if you're looking for a full-features navigation app... they're both going to disappoint you.

You could also try Microsoft's Live Search. I have an 8320 so no GPS receiver, but I find the search is better than Google's and in addition to directions, they also have a traffic map. I've used the traffic map and my Garmin to get around traffic.

Their map data is from Navteq which is what Garmin uses.

As a big google fan, I regretfully must agree that live search is better.

It gives you directory listings by category, rather than just doing a search. It also gives movie listings in a very nice interface.

The windows mobile version also lets to search for cheap gas, and I suspect that will get implemented for blackberry. It also supports voice input, we probably won't see that.

If google could somehow combine goog411 and gmap that would be pretty unbeatable.

AT&T did disable GPS apps except TelaNav on all BlackBerry devices at one time. Iygis may have been due to an agreement with TelaNav. However, after the iPhone came out many people got the BBs with WiFi over the iPhone and then doing out the limitation.

I think AT&T removed the limitation after that. Would be a good idea to search the net for the articles to that.

ok...installed google maps for 8310 and i dont see the feature "gps" inside google maps. when i head the 8700c and had google maps..it has the option "gps."

so i went to gps in advanced options and it has gps data source "device gps." but the latitude, longititude etc. is 0 degree. no info...what is up with that? so did at&t cripple it again?

If it works for you, move to Google Maps, or Nav4All for more features.

Mapquest navigator is a nice option as well.

It provides voice navigation and automatic rerouting. Works quite well in the 10 or so times I've used it and is completely free.

thx hatax...just installed it and went into "gps status" menu and it is not getting any info. im inside an nyc apt. i went close to my windows and point up to the sky...still nothing...it is raining today...but will stop later and i will go outside and walk around..see what happen then.

Just make sure you've got a good clear view of the sky. If its the first time using a GPS application it could take it a few minutes to acquire a signal.

I've been really happy with mapquest's product, very complete and even has voice navigation!

I did not know MapQuest had a BB app.
I am downlaoding it now.

Nav4All also have turn by turn voice navigation and automatic rerouting.

Would be nice to do a comparison of the two.

You can try the link HaTaX posted. Should work. But I would not be surprised if you have any problems :(

Note 2: MapQuest Navigator is not for use on 81xx/71xx devices. Does not fit the screen :(

I hear it was a misunderstanding and it was never locked down. That being said, I am happy that it is NOT locked. I have used nav4free, google maps, live search. They ALL work perfectly with the internal GPS. I now pay for Telenav though as it is a good piece of software.

Yup, all of the mapquest information says it is for Sprint / Nextel only, but I downloaded the 8703e version which is the proper screen size for an 8320. (320x240).
