Hi all

I am a new user to any blackberry I am hoping someone here can help me. This will be a long explanation, as I want to make sure you all have the complete information.

I started a new job on 1st Oct and was given a blackberry (sorry I can't remember what model it was). This blackberry didn't use BES, I am based in Uk and my head office is in Vancouver and all the Canadians are on BES, but no-one in UK is. So almost immediately I go over to Canada for training and I am happily using blackberry messenger. Then when I get back to UK, messenger works still. Then - disaster, I get given a new Blackberry 8300 and I swap sim cards, expecting everything to be on the new BB and it isn't!! So I spend time re-adding stuff and when I tried to add my messenger contacts, they won't work.

So when I added the contacts on the old BB, I added them using their email addresses. When I add them in the new one, they go into pending and stay there. If I get a friend to try adding me from their end, I see the invitation and accept it, then I end up in pending in their contact list and stay there.

So - how do I get this to work. It worked on the old BB - I did actually try swapping back. Unfortunately I had cleared everything down on the old BB and when I tried to add the contacts back in - I had the same problem!!!! That made me think it was a problem with o2 - then I remembered that it continued to work when I got back to UK, so it isn't that it only worked in Canada.

Thanks for any help - I really need to get this sorted as I travel a lot and this was a lifeline when I was in Canada.

PS - if I can't get this working - does MSN messenger work on BB?

Welcome to the BBForums.

Have you tried simply sending a PIN message to another BB user (messages > compose PIN)? You or they can receive a PIN message, then BBMessenger should work.

Please test that and report back. It will help to know.

The next best option is JiveTalk. It is the best working message application out there for BBs right now.

Hi - thank you so much - that has worked, well worked with the only pin number I know at the moment. It is annoying that using email address doesn't work anymore - doesn't make sense that using email worked and then suddenly didn't.

Becky, it should work then, if you are certain your friend received the PIN message. If it was Delivered, therre will be a small "D" by the message you sent. Ask your friend if they got it.

Where did your new 8300 come from? Brand new? Make certain there is NO security policy on it. Look at Options > Security > scroll to the bottom and see if ANYTHING is listed under "Services".

Its brand new from AT&T, is that good or bad?

How do you add someone to the list in the BB messanger of the 8310? Do you have to use the PIN number? Mine lets me select someone from the phonebook but it only edits the contact info rather than actually adding it as a contact?

It helps to have their PIN in the contact prior to adding. It will email the user otherwise.

I am pretty new to this, but does the the PIN follow the device? And in Becky's case could it be that the PIN still needs to be updated in the BIS website to send email? I could be wrong, but it's just a thought.

The PIN is hard-coded to the device, yes.

If she is receiving email, her PIN has likely been updated. But I asked if her PIN message was ever delivered to her friend and we have not heard back.

does PIN use SMS or Data? I have unlimited SMS, but no Data so would I still get charged?

Pin = Data.

Could you send me your pin (over private message) so I can do a single test to see if I'm setting it up right. I don't know anyone else's PIN yet.
