BB Curve on Verizon -
02-18-2008, 12:36 PM
Hey guys, new to this forum. I own a personal Verizon 8703e. I am a federal employee IT manager with a Marine Corps Command. We have an annual contract with Verizon that includes 250 8830 blackberries (which I have one of them too). In November their Govt sales rep told me they were getting the Curve and it was in testing. I asked about it because my wife wants one and he can get me a discount outside of my "new every 2" plan deal. He didn't know what the release date is because that's outside of his swim lane as the Govt won't buy Curves (due to the camera), he just knew it was in testing. Hope this helps. - Jim

A new VZW Acct. Manager was assigned to my account a few weeks back, and in our first conversation I said something like:
"I understand if you're not allowed to say anything, but is VZW getting the Curve?"
I was expecting some hesitation, but she came right out and said that, yes, Verizon will be getting the Curve - they've been advised that they can confirm that information. She said to look for it sometime in the second quarter, which makes sense if it's going to be announced at WES.
My guess is that it will probably show up in early to mid June.
BB devices I've owned: 957 : 7750 : 7250 : 8703e : 8830 : 9530 : 9630

This was on the blackberry page of the March/April/May issue of verizon price plans. You can tell it is not a 8830 or a curve.

It looks like a pearl thats been photoshoped to fit their hand. That same model is holding an obvious pearl on page 15 of the new business brochure.
what i find funny is page 28 of that verizon business booklet where the guy is holding GSM blackberry pearl (from the look of the back plate)
7280 > 7290 > 8700c > 8100 > 8800 > iPhone (??) > 8320.....and i'll just keep going.

That better be a bad photo shop creation, or that model should have her hand looked at by a specialist...
Knarly fingers, I am sure she is very talented in other ways...

VZW (and Sprint, Alltel et al) will be using CDMA 1xEVDO Rev A. for some time to come.
They will move to LTE going forward, but that is in the late 2009 time frame.

LOL. Of course that pic isn't a Curve or an 8830. It's a Pearl! Ahh. That was a good laugh.

As I posted in the other VZW Curve thread (sorry, new to this forum and didn't know there was more than one Curve thread)....
Some confirmed info from HoFo (I posted, any questions about my rep, ask their VZW forum mods). This info has been known for some time now, and if it's been posted here already, I apologize:
Quote:
- Release is targeted in April with VZW pushing for late March.
- It does have GPS, but the test versions so far have all been locked to VZ Navigator.
- It will not be WiFi capable.
- The release color scheme will be the same as the color above (titanium and black). This has been confirmed that while there may be other colors, this will be the release color.
- In terms of size, it is as identical to the GSM version as CDMA can get.
- This will not be a World Edition Device.
- It will be EVDO capable, but it is not known/has not been posted yet whether it will be REV A.
- The exact pricing is not known/has not been posted yet.
- It is, of course, QWERTY.
- It will be high capacity micro SD capable.

Rumours are started to circle about the possibility of a delayed release due to a production issue. At phonearena they have pushed back the release date until June 1, 2008.
Not sure if this means that it is strictly a Sprint issue or whether this impacts all CDMA carriers (which I suspect it might). Hopefully it turns out to be false.

Hi guys, new to this site as i'm looking for a VZW BB. My corporate business sales verizon rep replied to me today (3/17) about the curve with this:
I don't have a release date or a price yet. I am told it will be soon. I have seen a live device and it is small and compact, but has a great QWERTY keyboard. I've heard rumors it will be available in the beginning of April, but again, those are just rumors.

That sucks , we will have to see if this really happens or not? I have seen rumors of the Treo 800w being delayed to June also I wonder what is going on with Sprints road map of smartphones.
May the Blackberry be with you.

I talked to Verizon Customer Service the other day and the lady did not know anything about the curve coming out but she did tell me that April is when Verizon releases new phones. April is one of the Big Phones releases for the company. Take that for what it is worth. Sometimes I think I should just switch to AT&T so I can get a new phone when it comes out and not a year plus later. Just my 2 cents.

CDMA devices (starting with the 8130) are newer devices/advanced over their GSM counterparts

I agree with you but GSM seems to get the devices sooner. I am holding my breath for an April release cause I so very much want a curve.

Also, the licensing involved with CDMA manufacturing is considerably more prohibitive. Thank Qualcomm.

My personal opinion is this phone is only worth it with Rev. A. At least give us something to want it more than the GSM/EDGE Curve. (I realize EVDO Rev. O is faster, but not nearly fast enough for me when put into the perspective that this phone will be released a year later on CDMA. It will also be coming on the heels of the next generation GSM Blackberry's)

While I agree that I it takes entirely too long for the CDMA versions of phones to be released, my 8130 is light-years better than my 8100 was. Not being first to market is not necessarily a bad thing.

you will not notice that much difference unless downloading large files over Rev A. Rev 0's top speed is still PLENTY fast for normal browsing and email downloads. you will notice a difference on Rev A for upload though.

For me it is tethering that is the make or break. From a phone standpoint EDGE, EVDO, HSDPA are pretty much the same for my uses.

VZW Reps came to my office to try to earn our BB business. I asked one of the managers when VZW would see the Curve. He said 2 - 3 Weeks. Was this hype? Maybe, time will tell.

Nice try they would release a curve and then cannibalize the sales with a 9000 series right behind it. There is no point to this madness.
May the Blackberry be with you.

Normally I would tend to agree with you but, these devices are for two different types of consumers. I don't think their would be any cannibalization with the two devices. With the 8703e going away the 9000 would slide right in it's place. But as we all know time will tell the real story.
