Internet Speeds... -
11-11-2007, 12:39 AM
Which will have a faster internet, the ATT Curve 8310 or the Verizon 8830. I currently am selling my 8830 and i am worried that when i make the switch to the curve my internet will be noticeably slower. Is this true?
The folks at att said the blackberry internet is the fastest with their smartphones, but the fact that is lacks 3g worries me a bit. Should it not worry me?
Will the internet and network speeds of the 8310 be fast?
What are your thoughts and opinions? especially for all you guys that have the 8310 with att, let me know how it is.

EVDO is faster than EDGE. And there are no 3G BlackBerrys, so that issue is moot.
Theoretically speaking, the 8310 won't be any faster than my 8800 or the 8100 all working off of an EDGE connection.

EDGE speeds average 50-125 kbps with a max of around 300 kbps. EVDO averages between 400 to 800 kbps up to about 2.4 mbps.
The true speed depends on many variables, some being the device processor, memory, the connection itself, distance to the tower and tower congestion.
I don't see the lack of 3G as being a big deal unless you tether the device to a laptop or PC. Browsing on a handheld is definitely not fast for any device as most websites are not equipped for mobile browsing, plus the variables I listed above. It will be faster than EDGE, but whether it will be noticeable that much is debatable.

It is very noticeable ... I have taken my Verizon 8830 with me to the AT&T Store to compare against the curve and there is a big difference. Same with T-Mobile, EVDO is much faster for web browsing (even on mobile sites)

Not to sound rude, but EVDO is 3G ... So they're are 3G Blackberry's they are just on Verizon, Sprint & Alltel (All CDMA Handsets) In the US of Course, I don't know about the rest of the world.
Here is the Wikipedia on EVDO and 3G..

Don't believe everything you read on Wikipedia, given that it can be edited and changed at any time.
Some consider EVDO to be 3G, others do not. Many think of 3G as GSM only, since that is how it is referred to on those networks. 3G will be theoretically faster than EVDO, up to 14.4 mbps in theory, but only about 3.6 mbps in current implementations. Still waiting to see how T-Mo implements it.
There are BBs on 3G outside the US, in Europe specifically, but on a different frequency band than is available her ein the US. The 8707v is a good example.

BlackBerries tend not to have applications that benefit significantly by having access to higher data speeds. The browser is to simple too take advantage. Emails really don't need since they are already lightning fast, and since attachment support is so limited, large attachment downloads on the device aren't really of use. I just don't see any need for the higher speeds on this phone...
VOIP, UMA, and Wifi are nice for expanding uses of the devices but for speeding up the data I really am not convinced of the necessity..

Forgive the wikipedia link ... How about this one
Scalable Bandwidth EVDO - 3G Roadmap : EVDOinfo.com
Some consider and some don't? ... It is 3G my friend. However, everybody has different needs, and the Edge service is fine for most. In my market (Southern Arizona) there is a noticeable difference between browsing speed when comparing EVDO vs Edge ... If not for web use, what about applications that download information ... Next time you are near a non EVDO Blackberry pull up Blackberry maps or Google Maps with the two phones, the performance difference is literally night and day. Again, everyones usage patterns are not the same, however I am convinced that the EVDO service is worth having vs Edge, at least in my market.
