Do you have to do this if you want to color the LED?

genius!!! i had dust balls the size of the trackball itself in there. i've had to adjust the sensitivity to accommodate for the easiness in which the trackball rolls now. lol

I am trying not to panic...but
My trackball stopped moving upwards...as usual I came here did my search and found this excellent tutorial. Maybe I should've wait since I was very tired and it was 1 AM but, how can I sleep when my curve is not in perfect shape! So I followed the tutorial with the fantastic gigantic pics and found so much lint it was embarrassing. I am surprised it did not stopped working earlier (yes, is always in my shirt pocket.)

Now is three AM and I have not been able to mount it back. It just wont reassemble (the white plastic piece over the little rolls with magnets.) I decided I just need to sleep and in the morning, I will see the "light" and get it done.

ouch, okey - just remember that the last platic piece that you mention can only be mounted one way.
you can see my pictures that there is 2 dots pointing away from the trackball(one on each side of this plastic piece). if this is faceing towards the trackball - it is the wrong way, and it will not fit.

if you still are having problems, i can post som extra pictures later to day.

I swear I felt like a noobie again and I swore to gods and godess that I would never open my blackberry again if I get the darn thing working. Which I swore before re my PC and then broke the promise

Your last pic was a lifesaver. My BB curve is working great, although the trackball feels a bit tight, it is working in all directions again. I could not work on it before because odd enough I had to work today (a rarity!) but my mind was on the BB all day and I finally got it right! So, thanks for a great tutorial and 1,000,000 thanks for the support/rescue!

I love BBForums!

Question reinstalling the retaining ring - 10-04-2008, 04:35 PM

The instructions worked fine except I can't seem to reinstall the silver plastic/metal retaining ring that holds the trackball in place. There are three clips and I'm not sure what the orientation is to get it to seat properly. I've tried all ways and it never seems to seat properly.

Ablefton:

This pic from this excellent tutorial was the one that helped me the most when I had a similar problem:

http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/5...4620zl3.th.jpg

look at the pins position (it has to be exact!) and look at the white plastic position, it has two endings with miniature round spots on top that must also be specific. It also help if you kind of push the brackets of the aluminum ring in a little so they fall in position when you slide the white plastic piece down unto it.

In addition, please notice, that the way the picture is taken and the way you may be assembling it is different, to me it was better to have the plastic piece on top and in the picture is on the bottom (ready to go back into its phone place.) I was not taking that into consideration when assembling the little pins...I hope this helps!

To answer my own question, it does work for the 8330. Installs perfectly for anyone whom might need a new trackball.

How about a video of this? That would be cool...(Just an idea).
How do you change the color of the trackball? It's just easy as dabbing the trackball with a sharpie?

I have used this method to clean my trackball and let me tell you it was a pain. The bar magnets the ball rests on are so small and easy to lose track of. After getting the plastic piece off the ball everything comes apart (easy cleaning) but after trying to put it together you would need at least you and another person since the ball is so small. You're better off just taking out the ball, leaving it in its casing and just cleaning it with alcohol and a q-tip. Hope this helps :D

So is the risk/reward factor high enough to attempt this on my own? (I don't have a dirty trackball yet) But is this easy enough for the average joe to complete? I would really hate to try this and then not have a working phone.

My trackball wasnt scrolling up at all. So I just did this and it was very easy. Only took about 20-30 minutes and that includes taking it back apart cause I put the scroll wheels in wrong and up/down went left/right...lol. So swapped them how they were supposed to go and viola ...works perfect. Thanks for the write up.

Took my trackball out and attempted to clean it. Alas, I let way too much dirt get in the rollers. Now the trackball won't move in 2 directions at all. Had to buy a replacement trackball from the Android G1 and I can tell, it's like night and day. There's definitely a smoothness that I wasn't used to, not even with the original trackball when it was new. Had to touch lightly to scroll like as if I was touch typing, LOL.

Ok, my wife thought she could follow the instructions and clean the trackball, now it she can't get it back together. So here goes, 8310 does not have (or she lost) the retaining ring. I have the trackball assy and the chrome outer ring, it will not snap back in place. Is there a certain way the chrome ring needs to be set for it to snap back in or am I missing a part. Phone was purchased in Jan. 08 if this helps on model.

If I order a new trackball does it come with all the parts to put it back in.

Help!!!

There is no inner retaining ring on the newer devices. The trackball goes in only one of two ways. there are two little nubs on the bottom of the trackball assembly and they go into two small holes on the circuit board.

Then the chrome ring snaps in place with the retaining tabs at the 3, 6, and 9 oclock positions.

There are three sets of tabs on the chrome rings. If you're looking at the trackball on the BB, put the tabs at the 3, 6, and 9 oclock positions. The tabs go at the sides and the bottom of the trackball. There are no tabs on the top of the chrome ring.

After months of frustration over my trackball not working left or right properly I decided to give this a shot. 10 minutes later and HUGE wads of lint on each roller and its working just as it did the day I opened my pearl out of the box.

Thanks for the post and high-res pictures. Solved such a frustrating problem.

Well, I just tried this, and i cleaned it, put it back together, and got in in okay. But now it won't scroll up and down. Is there any reason as to why this would happen, and could i just order a new one?

EDIT: Actually, if I scroll up it goes right, down goes left, right goes down, and left goes up. Wtf?

EDIT 2: Oh wow, I realized what I did wrong, first person to guess it gets +3 internets.
