Default Where's My Memory Gone?

Please Login to Remove!

Hey Everyone,

I'm still learning the ropes of my 8830. I've been checking out apps to find replacements for what I used regularly on my Treo.

Last night while loading a couple apps, I got the error that I was dangerously low on system memory. I checked out the status and had only a few MB free. This morning I had 0mg free. I did a batt pull now my Status says:

File Free - 4835306 Bytes (4.6MB)
File Total - 47841280 Bytes (45.6MB)

First of all, I didn't think I had a whole lot installed and I've deleted things like the other languages, sample video and such that has been mentioned elsewhere to improve space. I've made sure that ringtones, pics and video are on my 1GB card. I'm evaluating software so I don't know which I will use and which I won't yet. I can't believe that I'm using 40MB or more yet.

How can I find out where all my space has gone? Is it possible to see what's using the most space?

Here's some apps that I have installed:
Beiks Dictionary Reader
Olivetree Bible Reader
Mobipocket Reader
Handmark Blackjack
Worldmate Live
Password Keeper
Pocket Tipper
Calculator
Memopad
Task
Brickbreaker
Facebook
Blackberry Manager
Infospace Find It
GCalSync
AvantGo
On-Demand
Google Maps
Blackberry Maps
6 Themes

I'm I really running too many apps?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.0) BlackBerry8320/4.2.2 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/100)

I would say your readers and themes are taking up the most space. I tell people you should stay above the 16MB mark to safely use the BlackBerry.

And yes that is a lot of apps.

Themes are HUGE and you can only use one at a time. I would start with those. No need to have 6...

Well this is a big change from my Treo. I had many more apps on it that used much less space. (27.1MB free out of 62.8MB)

I can get rid of the themes. You're right I don't need them I'm just checking them out.

So, can I see how much space an app takes up individually?

Yes, that is definitely a lot of applications. You can save some memory by deleting languages you don't use, and setting dedicated memory for photos to 0MB. You can search the forums for how to do that.

when you sync your bb to desktop manager and goto application loader, it should tell you memory size of each one.
erase programs that you don't use.

I am running .180, I have deleted the video, language packs, help, and brick breaker. I have installed Google Maps, Opera Mini, the bPhone theme and Splash ID. My memory hovers around 20MB free and have had no issues. I reboot about every three days for safe measure.

BEIKS is just about to announce new releases of both the BEIKS Dictionary Reader and the Noah Bible Study Viewer, both supporting installation of the large ebooks onto the media card rather than keeping them in the internal memory.

You can contact our support if you want a beta drive. Can't guarantee you will get it, but you never know before you try...

AvantGo is a killer. It caches all the pages you download for later reading. It was designed in the days of the Palm Pilot so you could use your computer to download the pages onto your Palm and read them later. One cool thing about the old Treos is that you could run some programs from the media card. Not so with Blackberrys. Every app will be on the internal memory.

I think the standalone facebook app may have a memory leak. I ran for months before installing it with no memory problems, left facebook running for a week and memory filled up. This is an untested, moderately unsubstantiate claim.

Now you have me thinking. How am I doing on memory?

File Total - 54,919,168
File Free- 8,210,424

What's the danger zone here?

I can only tell you my experience and my observations: I attempt to keep at least 15-16mb file free.

I see a lot of posts on this board, and I have not seen many posts that lose messages at 15mb free or above. I do see many with the issue who are 12mb free and below. I have seen a couple at 20mb free.

I unlocked all the themes for my Curve, and I think that ate up alot of memory. I'd like to delete all the unlocked ones except for the T-Mobile Zen ones (icons at the bottom of screen) how can I go about this?
