Even though it works through sms it needs data to connect. Do you have the data plan on your account?

I did not subscribe to a data plan, but when i signed up for unlimited sms, mms, and im for att wireless wouldn't you think "unlimited im" would mean that i could use the im client... What other instant messenger program can i use on my curve to take advantage of my unlimited messaging plan?

I agree. I learned the hard way. I was trying to use the oz messsenger on a 7100t which is tmobile. It stayed at 20% too. After I added the data plan I was good to go. There's a lot they should tell you but don't.
