From a 10,000ft view this smells like a firmware bug in the router, the UMA is exercising a networking feature that may not be properly supported by the Netgear code. Since you haven't mentioned, did you check the basics like making sure you're running the latest code release for the Netgear? Is the Netgear of a somewhat newer release, and not a 4yo router that hasn't had a firmware update in years? (I have a few like that, "pump & dump hardware" is my personal term for it)
