Question Is It True That..............

Please Login to Remove!

The Desktop Manager will not download third party applications. I was just hung up on by a "Tier 3" (BlackBerry Specialist) AT&T rep. I had tried the recommendations here to fix the fact that I cannot download applications from the Desktop Manager to my BB device, with no luck. I called Tech Support, and they asked what I wanted to download from the Desktop Manager. I explained that I had tried to download the following: powerOne for Blackberry, the New York Times link, BeamBerry, MarketFilters Analysis, Google Maps, and WorldMate Live. I had to download each application directly from the BB Device. I explained that I read on these forums, that I needed to make sure that both Desktop Manager and Device are using the same OS. I explained that I installed the latest OS from the AT&T download website. When I plugged in the device to sync, it also updated the OS I installed onto the Desktop Mgr. Desktop Mgr was using: v4.2.2.14, Device was using: v4.2.2.170. AT&T's BB specialist told me that they are NOT supposed to use the same OS. This is the best part: The specialist told me that "All the applications that I need to used on the BB Curve 8310 were installed by the time I bought it, and I don't need to install anymore apps, and that AT&T will not support third party apps". And then he hung up on me. I was also told that the Application Downloader on the Desktop Mgr is for downloading the backup if the device goes bad. What am I doing wrong that I can't download applications from the Desktop Mgr? Thank You. Hope all are enjoying the holidays.

You can download third-party applications using the Desktop Manager. What message are you receiving when you try to install applications using the Desktop Manager?

What is the name of the Handheld OS file that you downloaded? And what is the version of your OS on your BlackBerry (Options > About)?

Wow... a complete moron! Well, as far as I know you can't download OTA files and directly install them via DM. You're going to need to download the special files, plug it in, and then go to "add", I believe... And then you'll navigate to the file you want to install making sure that it's a DM installer file and not an OTA file. Hope that helped!

Zkyevolved, I have followed the procedure that you recommended many times. I am still getting the error: "No additional applications designed for your device were found." I have found that I can only download applications by going online via the BB device. The Device OS is: v4.2.2.170. The DM OS is: v4.2.2.14. Tech Support says that they are not supposed to be the same OS. If I am the moron, please enlighten me with the correct procedure to resolve this problem. Or, is Tech Support correct in saying that the Application Loader is only for downloading the back up files.

Sometimes the DM does not recognize some applications for some reason. I have had that happen and just re-download the application and sometimes it recognizes it.

I have re-installed the Desktop Mgr, I have re-downloaded the application. It seems the only way for me to get a new application on the BB device is to download it directly from the device itself. I would really like to be able to install any application that I want via the DM. Tech Support was no help. So, I am hoping someone here has a solution.

rbyers... you need to follow this carefully.

There's basically three pieces to this puzzle.
1. Desktop Manager which gets installed on your PC.
2. The Device software which gets loaded on your device.
3. The Device software which gets loaded on your PC.

You are missing item #3 above.

#1, You've confirmed that you have reinstalled Desktop Manager. That's good. Move on to item #2.
#2, You've confirmed that you have version 4.2.2.170 on your device. That's good. Move on to item #3.
#3, Since you have 4.2.2.170 on your device, you also need 4.2.2.170 on your PC. You need to find this software, download it, and then install it on your computer.

If you can't find 4.2.2.170 to install on your PC, then you can install a newer version, such as 4.2.2.181, and install that instead. This will upgrade your device to 4.2.2.181 as well.
More information about upgrading to 4.2.2.181 is here:
http://www.blackberryforums.com/gene...ilanguage.html

You can download 4.2.2.181 here:
https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads...70A3A6658DFDD5

Instructions for upgrading your device to a newer OS from another vendor is here:

Thank you. I will try this. But, you are saying that the AT&T Tech Support was wrong, as I was told that DM and Device need to have different OS. Thank you for the input. Will do this tonite.

You download the software you want to your PC, then run the executable and it should place the proper files in DM which is used to transfer and install the application on your BB.

So as far as I know, the RIM/ATT person is correct. You do not use DM to download. You use it to install. OTA downloads have to be requested and run via the BB itself, not the PC.

rbyers--forget what you have learned from ATT Tech Support, for now. It is not important to your issue being solved. Your issue is one the very easily solved when the directions are understood and followed exactly. There obviously is some confusion over the "same OS" wording which has you confused.

Still--if you follow what Penguin has posted, it will work. It will work without a doubt.

Last I checked 4.2.2.170 is still up on AT&T's site. You should be able to grab it here.

https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads...E4F82F9F00E7D4

Just click the drop down list, forget the Desktop Manager software and find your BB model, which I presume is an 8310.

I'm not positive but, after you install 170 on your PC and run the Application Loader from Desktop Manager, scroll the list that will appear. There's a chance that it may want to install additional languages (I can't quite remember how it behaved when I did it. But if you removed other languages besides English when you first ran the Setup Wizard on the BB, it might behave the way I'm describing.) If you see a lot of languages with checkmarks next to them and you don't need them, uncheck those languages to keep memory free on your BB. If the additonal languages aren't checked you should be good to go when installing downloaded apps.

JSanders and rbyers I think you both misread what zkyevolved said. I don't think he was calling rbyers a moron, I read it as him calling the AT&T Tech a moron. I could be mistaken, but that's how I read it.

He was talking about the ATT operator, not the BB Forums member. That is how I read it. Show the love people.

Just got the Curve through TMo and I love it so far.

I understand that now, I did confuse his statement towards the AT&T Tech and the OP here.

It's straight.
