Default 8310 OS: Singapore Telecom Mobile Pte Ltd v4.2.2.338 / 4.2.2.184 (Chinese) - 12-21-2007, 02:46 AM

Get it here

Quote:
Software For BlackBerry Curve 8310 (TM)

BlackBerry Handheld Software v4.2.2.338 (Chinese)

Package Version: 4.2.2.338
Consisting of:
Applications: 4.2.2.184
Software Platform: 2.5.0.40
File name: 8310CJK_PBr4.2.2_rel338_PL2.5.0.40_A4.2.2.184_Sing Tel.exe
File size: 93.77MB
It is ~18.5MB bigger than the previous 4.2.2.181 version.

To install extra vendor themes:

GOTO C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\8310-v4.2.2.184_P2.5.0.40, rename the blackberry.alx to OLDblackberry.alx, install the attach blackberry.alx to install all vendor themes.
BlackBerry.zip

To install BBMaps For ATT/Cingular/Orange (and some other European carriers)

GOTO C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\8310-v4.2.2.184_P2.5.0.40, rename the LBS.alx to OLDLBS.alx, install the attach LBS.alx to install BBmap.
LBS.zip

To remove Push To Talk:

GOTO C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\8310-v4.2.2.184_P2.5.0.40\Java, rename the net_rim_bb_phone_ptt_app.cod to OLDnet_rim_bb_phone_ptt_app.cod, to remove PTT.

This OS can be installed on ANY 8310 regardless of brand.

Installation Instructions

1. Make sure you have the latest version of Desktop Manager installed. Currently, the latest version available is 4.3 and may be downloaded here: http://www.blackberry.com/go/softwaredownloads

Note: Desktop Manager 4.3 still has some issues. Desktop Manager 4.2 SP2 is recommended but 4.3 can be used if desired.

2. Download the above file to the PC then install it to the PC by running the file you downloaded.

3. Locate the vendor.xml file and delete it. It is located at C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research in Motion\Apploader

4. Plug in the BlackBerry and open Desktop Manager. You should be prompted to upgrade.

The process takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much data you have to backup and restore during the process. Once it's done loading the new OS it will reboot (it may do this twice during the entire process.) You will see a white screen with an hourglass for up to 20 minutes at a time while the DM says "waiting for initialization." Don't unplug from the PC & Don't remove the battery unless the spinning hourglass has been there for 30 minutes or more. If the hourglass has been spinning for more than 30 minutes continuously you will need to wipe the device with JL_Cmder (close out of Desktop Manager during this process.) You will then end up with a white screen with small icons and an error code number like 507 or 543.

If you end up with a white screen with small icons and the number 507/543, simply connect to DM again and run application loader again and it should load the OS to the device.

This upgrade is not getting the usual interest. Is there a reason behind that? Is every one is waiting for long atnticipated 4.3!?

It's too close to a weekend and a holiday weekend at that. The previous OS was 4.2.2.181 so this isn't really a big upgrade.

Just got a new 8310 (first time BB user). Nothing on the phone yet - virgin. Loaded 4.3 desktop, downloaded & installed the update, removed Vendor.xml, added BB maps, removed PTT etc etc and did the upgrade after it prompted. Said "update successful" yet when I go to the info screen it still says V4.2.2.175. BBMaps are there and PTT is gone but the version isn't right.

Also, I keep getting a popup with "Exception Processing Error" when I start Desktop - Windows NO DISK. I hit CANCEL and it goes away and then pops up a few minutes later.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Happy Holidays!

Go back to 4.2.2 desktop manager, seems 4.3 has bugs. I installed the new software and just starting to use it. Didn't see anything wrong with the Suncom one.

I just realized I posted in the wrong thread about this upgrade. I spent all day yesterday getting it working correctly on my 8310 that had .170 on it still. I had some issues where I wasn't able to send via BIS and the internet was real slow on it. It took awhile but I finally got .170 back on it and plan on leaving it alone until 4.3 comes out.

My internet and everything works fine. I actually have a little more memory with this one compared to the Suncom one.

What Blackberry.alx file did you replace it with? Are you trying to add themes? You may see the hourglass for 5-10 minutes when adding themes.

JBlue,
I dunno how much of the upgrade you completed, but expect your phone to be unusable for 45 minutes once the upload starts. The phone will sit there on its last reboot for a LOOOONNNNNGGGG time, with just an hourglass.

I installed OS v4.2.2.175 (chinese) two weeks ago, able to read and input chinese. So I would not try 4.2.2.184 until 4.3 is ready. =)

FYI, the link in message #1 of this thread is downloading an older version of the OS: (Software v4.2.2.321). However the Rapidshare link is the right version. It seems as if they pulled the new version off and went back to an older version.

Unfortunatly, we can't allow the links to other unapproved download sites for the RIM OS's. It's against the license agreement for download from the RIM/Carrier sites. I've removed the RapidShare link (sorry folks.)

However, the original link still takes you to the 4.2.2.184 OS for the 8310.

Why do you remove the PTT?

And I assume that the Chinese OS also has English language on it right?

I will be laying hands on my 8310 in two weeks time so it'd be rather better for me to do the upgrade first right?

Thank you for your answers, I know these are n00bish questions but I am a quick learner.

Tmobile don't have PTT and for AT&T, you have to paid a subscription for PTT.

Will the attached blackberry.alx file work with 4.2.2.170? I'm just going to wait for 4.3 but want to unlock all the vendor themes. Thanks!

OK but leaving it won't cause any problems right? However I suppose one gains extra memory by doing so.

What about the language. What does having the OS in Chinese mean? Is it the only language pack or meaning it also does have Chinese in it?

If I remember correctly, I did enable PTT on my tmobile 8700G and I get error, so if you are on tmobile or not using it on AT&T, take it out and it also save on memory too.

Chinese OS is the regular English OS with the additional Chinese input and display support, which can be disable during installation or remove with desktop manager at any time.

Another quick newbie question. My operator provides 8300 and 8320. And there are software upgrades available for these phones.

My phone is 8310, which I will use this upgrade. Can I by some method extract the themes of my operator from the 8300 and/or 8320 upgrade files?

Thank you for the answer. What I meant was to pull the theme files from the 8300 update software and insert it into the theme file on 8310 update.

All the theme files should be the same across the 8300/8310/8320 devices. They're all included in each OS. The vendor coding on your device tells the desktop manager what themes to load. You have to edit the blackberry.alx to get the other themes.

How to Add Vendor Locked Themes - BlackBerryFAQ.com

Also check the "Optimize your BB" link in my sig for lots more tips like this.

I've installed, tried that, not a great difference from previous version. Have here 8110 with 4.3 and i would really love to have 4.3 on my 8310 :-/
No issues whatsoever during the installation, it is running same speed like the previous version.

How come that the BlackBerry won't last long for me?
7290 -> 8700g -> 7130g -> 8100 -> 8300 -> 8110 -> 8310 -> 9000 ... who will be next?

Another thing you might try is downloading them with Firefox and the plugin "Download Them All" found here. Similar to the old Download Accelerator, which makes multiple connections to the download point, then pieces everything back together when it's done streaming it, it increased my download speed to around 80 kb/s average.
