Default GPSed brings more GPS-based functionality for Curve 8310 - 12-26-2007, 12:01 PM

Blackberry 8310 has built-in (internal) GPS module.
Would you like to know how you can get more from GPS functionality?

What GPS is

GPS stands for Global Positioning System. It is based on the network of satellites that continuously transmit coded information, which makes it possible to precisely identify locations on earth by measuring distance from the satellites. You can use GPS easily and free of charge. All you need is a GPS receiver that is already built in your BlackBerry 8310.

What advantage can you take of GPS?
You can enjoy many interesting functions on your Blackberry, for example:
* record tracks of your trips anywhere on the Earth from your BlackBerry. Your tracks will be traced on Google Maps and stored in an online archive or in your BlackBerry.
* show to your friends the instant position on a map when you are traveling
* map digital photos precisely at a place they were taken. It doesn’t matter if the photos are captured with your Blackberry or with another digital camera.

How to?
Step 1. You just need to download GPSed Blackberry app.
You can download it over-the-air at: GPSed.com - GPS tracking from your mobile
or download it to your PC at Download GPSed mobile application - Mobile GPS Tracking Service and install it via cable.

GPSed BlackBerry application is absolutely free.

Step 2. Sign up to GPSed online service at:
Register new account - Mobile GPS Tracking Service
It’s free and easy.

You can find more information about GPSed at:
About - Mobile GPS Tracking Service

GPSed project is now in public beta. If you have any comments or questions, we would be ready to ask you. Please post to this thread.

...and doesn't seem to work. (Looks nice though!)

Dumps "gpsedbb-2 not found" from an OTA install today, on a new 8310 running 4.2.2. (and then vanished after a reboot)

Any ideas? I'll try remove/install again....

I'm getting the same thing:

I used GPSed for a couple weeks, but it was not that dependable.
The application would just stop recording for some reason, both on
short and long trips. The update interval also seemed very arbitrary.
This is after making sure no other applications were using the GPS,
after fresh battery pull, 20+ meg of memory free, etc...

bbTracker has turned out to be the most dependable of the free GPS
software choices that I have tried my self.

However, I would be open to assistance and support from the GPSed folks
as I do like their product and web site track features.

I downloaded the software and created an account, but cannot seem to figure out how to track? I was able to send my current location via email and set the uploading frequency to several alternatives, but the two do not seem to sync? What am I missing?

Yes, we are aware of this. It happens rarely, still does. Of course we are going to fix it with the next update.

The update interval depends on points saved in the clipboard. The server updates the info as far as the clipboard is full, when the clipboard is rather empty, the server doesn't update. In brief that is why the interval is arbitrary.

To start recording a track please go to New track -> Menu button -> Start.
If you have chosen to upload automatically, then synchronizing would be automatically too.
If you haven't uploaded yet, please push the Menu button and select upload to GPSed.

Hope this helps.

Angry GPSed "Fixing Position" problem - 04-20-2008, 05:42 PM

Hi,
I am using GPSed on a Blackberry 8310 and the internal GPS.

My question/problem is that, while sometimes this works fine, many times when i press "New track" or "Continue track" it says ...

"Fixing Position" then "Tracking"
then "Fixing Position" then again "Tracking" and so on .. and it does not record the track.

The "Duration" counter remains unchanged while "Fixing Position" and FOR SO LONG that out or a minute it may record only one second .. or even nothing most of the time.

I did go outside (coverage is not the issue here)
I did reinstall the application (more than once)
I did check Options-Adv. Applications-GPS and the gps is working fine, i did press "refresh" there and i have 6 to 10 satellites available (refresh only took 5 seconds) .. YET GPSed CANNOT RECORD ON A CONSTANT BASIS ..

sometimes it works great .. other times it does that "Fixing Position" for ever .. what the is going on ?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
I really like this application (especially due to the option to upload the tracks on the web) .. but i have been having this issue for quite some time ..
Is there anything I can do ???

Thanks,
AP.

Default GPSed causing excessive battery consumption - 04-23-2008, 03:57 PM

I loaded what was then the current version of GPSed onto my Curve 8310 about a week ago, used it a few times for tracking my bicycle routes, and had no problems as far as tracking functionality was concerned.

However, I started noticing that my battery was being drained very rapidly even when I did not have an active track or bluetooth enabled. I verified that with GPSed installed my battery life, with no other useage, was about 15hours. Without GPSed the battery lasts at least 5 days. As a result I've uninstalled until I can get an explanation of this behavior.

I initially tried contacting support from the GPSed web site, but received no reply.

Hello ppanish,

Actually GPSed doesn't really drain the battery.
So I can assume that something went wrong. I did the right thing when uninstalled the app. I will forward your report to our developers.

Sorry for inconvenience.

Shape,

My assumption is that GPSed keeps the GPS active even after the track has been stopped and the user has hit exit. This could be a result of not properly closing the interface to the GPS device, or probably any of a number of other explanations.

What is clear is that GPSed is the cause of the problem. It doesn't matter if it directly uses the battery (whatever that would mean), or if it makes use of services which consume power (which it definitely does).

I find your response to be very confusing, but thanks for forwarding it to the developers.
