Default UMA Calling

I was driving by a T-mobile Hotspot yesterday and noticed it switched to UMA. So I made a call. Are these calls free even if I have not signed up for the service? Or is it just switching what signal I use to make calls?

No, the calls aren't free and will use your plan minutes. They are only free if you are subscribed to the HotSpot@Home plan.
