Desktop manager is the application that allows you to sync the handheld with outlook, load applications and backup the device. Device manager is the process in the background that manages the way the handheld connects to the PC.

Okay, I think I have that straight. I hope you're not as confused as I was when I learned that.

okay, i bought this curvr from a private party, so when I went to connect the curve to the Desktop Manager from the disk that was provided I receved this error message in the application loader page, "the BB software does not have BB Device Software for the device that you have connected to the computer." It looks like i need to wipe everything out and start over again as if the curve came from the store, right?? if so then how do I wipe out the OS on the BB.
Thanks

You will need to install the OS on your computer in order to get the Application Loader to work. You can either install the same version which was on the phone, or choose your own version. Lots of links in the forum to the various carrier versions available.

You don't have to wipe the device in order to load the OS again, but if you do, note that it does not necessarily set the phone back to it's shipped condition. If the device was on someone's work BES, you may have IT policies restricting you from certain types of access.

You can search the forums to learn locations to download the OS you'd like to run, how to wipe the device, as well as possible ways to remove IT policies (if they are on your phone).

mmm, nice vague answer. Do you really need help?

Here, very specifically-- Application Loader Error - BlackBerryFAQ.com

Sorry for the vague response. I bought this Curve from a private party. The Curve has OS 4.2.2 per the Options- About findings. So I installed Desktop 4.2.2 on my computer, but it will say the same thing in error with the Device Manager. I even attempted to install 4.3 to my computer, but received an error from Installshield that a runtime error had occured and could not complete installation.

I do not know if this helps, but I previously owned an 8100 Pearl. when I received the Curve I deleted the Desktop Manager I had with my Pearl and inserted the CD that came with the Curve, that is when I get my APP Loader error.

Please help.

ok.

You have not installed the Operating System which is also on your handheld device to the PC, have you?

Three components are needed
a) Desktop Manager
b) BB Operating System
c) the application alx/cod file you wish to install.

...as is stated in the FAQ

I understand if you are confused, you are not the first. This seems to be a common question. I have asked what could be made clearer in the FAQ to explain this.

Yes, I went to the phone and saw it was running via 4.2.2, so I went to the BB.com site and downloaded the 4.2.2 with SP2 to no avail. The program would not install to my computer. The Installshield stated there was a runitme error.

NONONONO
You must install the BB handheld Operating system to your PC, AND also the Desktop Manager.

Three applications must be on your PC... the OS of the BB, the DM, and the application you wish to install.

You absolutely need to read the FAQ link several posts back.

Step by step instructions and where to download all you need.

I have previously read the FAQ on Application Loading Errors and it would not complete installation (previous post with the InstallShield saying a Runtime error occured), but I will try it again. This is why I am leading towards wiping the phone clean and starting from scratch.
