Default Thinking of switching from Verizon

Please Login to Remove!

Hello Everyone!

Right now I am the sad owner for a Treo 700p... it's a love hate relationship lol. Love it b/c I can do everything I typically need on it but I hate it b/c like just about every other Treo on the planet it's slow, resets, and overall garbage. This is actually my 3rd Treo right now over the past 3 years and with the keyboard backlights flickering on this one, it may be on it's way out as well.

So... contract was up last year with Verizon which means I'm able to pick and choose again and I'm VERY interested in the 8310 through AT&T. My question goes to anyone that has made this switch. Did it bother you much going from the EVDO speed to EDGE? Thats my main concern at this point is if the slower speed with annoy me.

As most of you may have seen there are rumors the Curve is coming to Verizon which will probably support EVDO but the hang up with that is the fact that the GPS will most likely be disabled on it focing me to pay $10 a month for the VZ app and not be able to use any of my own. That alone steers me clear of that when/if it comes out.

So anyway, back to the question... those that have switched, been happy even with the drop in speed from EVDO to EDGE?

Thanks!

If you want EVDO speed and GPS, you could try Sprint.....

Just be sure you dont have to deal with their customer service, JD Powers worst in the industry 3 time winner! Sprint's BB plan includes more than any other for the price, $30, GPS, Email, Internet, TV, Music Store access, Unlimited messaging. its a great plan, and they offer the same devices as VZW on a similar network (they actually have a slight edge in EVDO rev A speeds at the moment)

I just made the switch from Verizon to ATT and haven't noticed a significant change in data speeds. Overall I'm pretty happy with the switch.

for most things you wont, streaming video/audio you will though. EDGE avg - 200-400kbps, EVDO rev 0 is 400-700kbps avg. You are not going to notice a significant difference in web browing or using internet applications

I just made the switch from the 8830 on VZW to the 8310 on ATT and am very happy. There is a slight speed difference, but unless you're looking at them side-by-side, its hardly noticeable. Even side-by-side it's marginal.

The 8310 is an awesome device.

i switched from the VZW 8830 and the AT&T 8310. The only time i notice data speed differences is the loading of web pages. If you frequently browse mobile web pages(i do not) or use some sort of RSS reader, then you may notice the difference in speed. If you are straight email, IM, Phone, and SMS/MMS then AT&T it may be worth the switch.

if GPS is something you are interested in(i donthave much use for it), then again AT&T offers you a better choice since you have more freedom.

The one and only reason i switched is i moved to the ONLY place my VZW service did not work well so I had to switch. However, i have no complaints with AT&T

I was die hard verizon for 7 years and recently decided to switch to at&t last month. I had the 8830 with vzw but fell in love with the curve. At first I noticed the difference in web browsing, but after a week or so it wasn't too bad. Although there's a spot a my work where the internet dosent work but where the 8830 worked flawlessly, but its managable. In terms of call quality there's a lil bit more static and there are places where I have 1 bar when I used to have 3 with verizon, but do mostly texting and messaging anyways.
So far I don't really regret making the switch cause the curve kinda balances everything out for me. It does suck that the curve will be out for verizon in a couple of months, but the fact that at&t should get a new blackberry a couple of months later kinda makes it better. Hope this helps

Yeah, I'm on the border line of switching where the thing is I want GPS, Qwerty Keyboard, and Camera all mixed into one with a phone thats stable. I've had Microsoft OS phones in the past and ended up selling them b/c I couldn't stand how unstable it was. From everything I've read and heard from people I know their Blackberry is rock solid which is what I'd love to have b/c I'm getting sick of the quirks the Treo has... like pressing the power button to have to wait, and wait, and wait for it to actually turn on. Then sometimes it doesn't turn on and I have to do a soft reset... and this is all not more than a week after I just did a hard reset. GPS with ATT isn't free but I didn't plan on using it anyway for other applications out there.

Problem however is the 8310 isn't offered through Sprint. I've gotten accustom to having a Qwerty keyboard and don't want to give it up lol.

Yeah, I won't deny, the Sprint plans are cheaper... however, I'm very interested in the 8310 as stated above which is only AT&T at this point. Not to mention the Broadband coverage here in Greenville, SC is nearly nonexistent.

Thank you for the input!

Question... say you're trying to watch videos on YouTube's mobile site... any issues? I tend to find myself doing that to help kill time sometimes.

Thanks! Thats what I've been hearing which makes me want to switch more and more but want try to eliminate some of my concerns before doing so.

Sounds good, it appears that way where I'm at as well. Verizon worked well for me while I was in Cincinnati, no complaints at all but since coming to Greenville I find myself going in and out of coverage. While I was in Home Depot on VZW I had to hold my arm strait up in the air to grab enough coverage to load a website I was trying to get to. One of the sales people in Home Depot walks by me and says "Verizon Huh?" From then on I've asked people on AT&T in this area how they are and they have no complaints but VZW people all say the same thing.

Thank you very much! Just hope that if a new Curve does come out for AT&T in a few months that it'll be 3G in which case I'll be all over it since it's my speed concern that is making me hesitant at this point.

Before you make the move, just make sure whatever carrier you are thinking of using has the coverage when and where you need it - where you live, work, travel and play. Switching just to get a cool phone or a cheaper plan are all secondary issues. Coverage is the primary one.

Oh for sure... what I was debating on looking into their trial period by signing up with a whole new account while also keeping my VZW account and number... then try it out for the 30 days and cancel it... then if I like it resign up and bring my number over.

I made the change and I cant stand EDGE. There is a HUGE difference in speeds. I've had BBs, Moto Q, Treo's and other PDA phones on VZW over the years and EVDO blows EDGE out of the water. Honestly if speed is important to you I wouldnt make the switch. Basically with EDGE I find browsing on the BB basically useless. And I'm in an a solid area. What I will say (which I found very surprising) was ATTs coverage vs VZW. I have always heard that VZW was better but South of Boston, NYC, Los Angeles, San Fran, In the middle of nowhere Vermont (which my VZW NEVER worked) my ATT phone works like a charm. That is the main thing that sold me. After the mistake with the iPhone I almost went back to VZW but decided to stay due to the better coverage (at least in the places I travel)

Back to speed. My brother has a pearl on VZW and I have the Curve on ATT. Often I say "hey lets do a speed test" we both so what we do is open the browser go both enter a webpage and I will hit "go" on both phones at the same time. 100% of the time the Pearl finishes loading the site 3-5 seconds faster then the Curve. And thats if the Curve is having a good day. I know it doesnt sound like much, but add that up jumping from page to page, also add in the fact that blackberry's are slow anyway and it will start to get to you if you are use to VZW. And if you ever try an iPhone (which i would suggest not to though lol) it will KILL you going from WiFi to a Blackberry on EDGE talk about heartbreaking speed difference lol.

Another thing to remember is that voice and EDGE cant work at the same time. Meaning if you are on the web you can miss a call and it can go directly to VM. Also if you are on the phone you can not receive email. Its really not a big deal, but with VZW this doesnt happen because EVDO works differently. If browsing the web on EDVO it drops the data connection and the call has priority you can also get emails while talking on the phone (I really dont know who needs this).

But I will say that I really havent missed that many calls due to browsing (like I said I'm not a fan of browsing on the BB anyway so thats prob why) and the SECOND I hang up I can see the EDGE data arrows and I start getting the emails that were sent while I was talking on the phone. I kid you not, its almost instant after I hit the end button.

Not a big "issue" but is for some people
