Default Connection Preference

Please Login to Remove!

When I browse to Manage Connections -> Mobile Network Options... I see a connection preference with the following choices:
- Mobile Network Only
- Mobile Network Preferred
- WiFi Only
- WiFi Preferred

What do these do?

These allow you to control whether you use Wifi/UMA or EDGE for your Voice/SMS connection.

Yup, what John said.

Specifically:

Mobile Network Only: Will only connect via the cellular network. Won't use a Wi-Fi connection even if that's all that's available.

Mobile Network Preferred: Will connect via the cellular network if it can get a halfway decent signal. If it cannot, it will use a Wi-Fi connection if one is available.

Wi-Fi Preferred: Will connect via a Wi-Fi network if it can get a halfway decent Wi-Fi signal. If it cannot, it will use the cellular network, if it can get a cellular signal.

Wi-Fi Only: Will only connect via a Wi-Fi network. Won't use the cellular network even if that's all that's available.

Better explanation. Seems obvious to me but maybe not to others.

I work at an IT helpdesk; it's my job to come up with explanations that seem obvious to people like you and me, but not necessarily to others ;).

Oh, yeah, I wasn't trying to criticize or anything. I'm just, I guess you could say, in the habit of giving over-detailed explanations to certain kinds of questions .

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.0; Google Wireless Transcoder;))

Well I have excellent reception all the time so I guess I will set it to mobile network only... Will it affect my sms, email, or wifi in any way?

Do you not use wifi at all? I would recommend leaving it in wifi preferred. That way it will automatically connect when in range of a wifi network (TMo Hotspot or network that you've previously setup.)

Wirelessly posted (BB 11020)

Does this device that's not working have a data plan? If there is no data plan then you need to go to Options >Advanced Options >Browser and set the default browser to wifi (Hotspot) browser. Then connect to the wifi network. The wifi logo will never go bold and you will always have a yellow circle in manage Connections.

This phone does not have a data plan but I do have t-mobile hotspot so how would I know that im connected to a wifi network if the icon doesnt go bold? And if my phone is set to mobile network only how will I use wifi? Is it not possible to get the connection preference option to change to wifi preferred on this phone?

It will say the name of the wifi network at the top of your phone. You should also be able to use uma. If your phone is set to "mobile network only" then you won't ever see uma. To change it go to Options >Mobile Network and set it to wifi preferred.
