do you mean an excel document? If you send it to yourself as an attachment you can view but not edit.

if you need to edit you will need something like eoffice

The Office Mobile apps will not work on a BB. As mentioned above, you can get a 3rd party program, eOffice, from Dynoplex which will allow you to open and edit word and excel documents.

The new update is supposed to coincide with Documents-T0-Go for the Blackberry by DataViz. This program (third party) will allow creating/viewing/editing of MS Office documents on your Blackberry. Now we're just wainting......

Sith: I think that the free version shipping with the new OS only gives us editing of Word docs. Word and Excel at most. Beyond that (Power Point), one would need to purchase the full version (for editing purposes). Si?

Initial reports from DataViz (which makes "Documents To Go") suggest it will work only with the BES version of OS 4.5. Many of us (who use BIS) are hoping that's not the case.

Default Free Alternative

I took all of my Office documents (Word/Excel/PowerPoint) and imported them into Google's Documents program online.

I then downloaded the Google Doc's App to my BB.

Now, I can view and edit, even create files on my BB and they get updated on the web. I can synch them with my PC, and even "Export" them back out of Google doc's online to an Office Format.

It's not 100%, and there are a lot of ADVANCED fatures missing... But, for Free, cross platform, and no files actually stored on the BB, I can live with it.

I've heard conflicting reports about the need for BES with Docs To Go. It's really gonna bake my noodle if we do indeed need it to get Docs To Go.

its a feature of BES, and it will require a BIS update to work for BIS users. (this was announced by RIM a while back)

Not sure what that means...given that users have no control over BIS. Here's what it says on the DataViz website:

Documents To Go for BlackBerry: Word, Excel & PowerPoint on your BlackBerry Smartphone
==
To take full advantage of this feature, users will need an update to BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 4.1.5 as well as an OS update for their BlackBerry smartphone to version 4.5.

I think you can only Edit Word and Powerpoint if you have BES 4.1.5 and OS 4.5 on the device.

Excel is coming in a future release.

A quick side note, at least on mine, the phone cannot view documents in the new office 2007 (vista) format.

Depends on your meaning of use! You can move a file to your BB and read it only, no editing. But that would be considered viewing not using. And this is based on the current released software for an 8310, and not using any 3rd party software.

So to answer your question you can view only not edit.

Agreed, the Google suite works reasonably well now and holds lots of promise as it matures. I am using it.

Yes, what ever happened to "that" BIS update where we were to get some of the features offered BES users? What ever happened to the new OS? <vbg>
