Look over this thread, and if you have further questions about GPS, etc., post them there or in that forum... Some other free apps there. Google Maps is good, I think better than BBMaps anyway, I don't even load BBMaps any longer.

Telenav is $9.99 per month, and it is good, the best.

i just installed this update to my 8310 and my Messages icon is missing. i've tried the 'show all' trick from the home screen but still no Messages icon. it's not visible in either the Today Plus screen or the applications screen. any ideas?

Pull the battery on the BB, hold a minute, replace and reboot. Likely you just need to get the service books restored to your device...

The LBS.alx file is not a themes file, it is the "Location Based Services" cod, i.e., BlackBerry Maps.

Im back again!! Just curious if this behavior has happened on anyone else that upgraded to this OS..
I just noticed yesterday afternoon, that my Message deleting options are changed.
When I used to delete an email on my Curve, I had the option of either Mailbox And Handheld or just Handheld Only. That whole menu is gone and now when I hit delete I only have the option to either Delete or cancel.. Granted it doesnt touch the actual stuff on my imap server which is good but just wondering..
Other than that, since getting BBMaps fixed (I ended up installing Google Maps as well which works just as fine) this things working like a charm!
Im just hoping 4.5 comes out before the end of the month so I can use the nice new video cam feature to record the Iron Maiden show Im going to on the 30th mwhahahaha!

Wirelessly posted (8310 Curve)
I finally did it a couple if days ago. I went from 25and some bytes to over 27339728 bytes.
My BB browser loads faster, but Opera is erratic when using track ball. What I mean the page does not scroll smoothly. Just a touch of the track ball jumps the page up and down.
Everything else works fine. My GPS also responds faster and gets me almost shows to my exact location. Camera works the same and seems my VOD reacts better.
Guess I got lucky. Also the DM has a nicer start screen. I even put the Roxio in and my computer is not locking up like before. The only problem is it starts up when I turn my computer on. Yes I have the options set not to do that.

Hey so I'm new to all of this with my first BB, when updating the OS why do you need to delete "Locate the vendor.xml file and delete it. It's located in c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader"?
Just curious

Nate, this OS linked in the first post above was released by TIM, an Italian cellular company. Since it was released by them, they have it "branded" in the vendor code to only load to their BlackBerrys. However, since RIM actually certifies the OS releases, we know it is good for ANY 8310 model, from any carrier.
So deleting the "vendor.xml" file in effect, removes the 'branding" of that OS release.

It changes nothing as far as how the OS is loaded or what options are loaded or anything like that. All it does is tell Dekstop Manager whether or not to load the OS to a certain brand of BB.

Please forgive my ignorance if I’m missing something. But before I update to this OS (4.2.2.351) I want to make sure this is the most recent. I have out of the box from AT&T an 8310 OS 4.2.2.170. I have seen a bunch of posting about 4.3 and 4.5 but don't see them anywhere (assuming they do not exist for an AT&T 8310). With that being said and I correct in assuming this is the most up to date OS for my 8310 with AT&T?
Thanks!

Yes, this is the most recent. There are beta OS's out there (4.3/4.5)but they have connectivity issues and I wouldn't recommend loading them.

I know that the process of loading the OS includes a backup and restore of the data. Exactly what is retained following the install process? I have created additional profiles and customized others... will that carry forward or will I need to re-do all of that work? Do installed applications (BBWeather, etc) also come forward on the updated version?

All your data and settings (including profiles) will be backed up and restored, as will 3rd party apps. BBWeather will likely lose it's profiles, though.
Also, in case of a glitch during loading I recommend the following:
http://www.blackberryforums.com/rim-...arty-apps.html
I do this each time I do an OS upgrade and occassionaly just as part of regular backups.

Does it finally support AAC M4A tags?

Yes, you will want the complete backup made and all those settings will e restored on reload. Profiles and all. About the only think that is NOT reloaded is any license keys and registration number of any purchased application on your BB. Write those down, first.

it all just seems so unuser friendly to me to have to go in and delete vendor files and make seperate back ups of data from applications and have to write down serial numbers etc..
I know this is a very clever piece of software but what use is a clever piece of software that needs you to write down on a seperate piece of paper the serial number to an application so you can re install.
RIM needs some non software managers in there who will get them to do the technology and the updates in a user friendly manner.
how about the system files being stored in a seperate section of memory to the application files etc..

Loading other carrier's OS's to the BB is a hack. Deleting the vendor.xml file is a hack. If you only download the releases from your carrier you don't have to delete the vendor.xml file. As far as separate backups for applications and data, the Dekstop Manager does all this automatically for you. If you just want to install the released update from your carrier then all you have to do is:
1. Install Desktop Manager
2. Install the OS
3. Plug in BB and run Desktop Manager. It will prompt to upgrade. It will backup and restore everything.
There's no more to it.
I wrote the post about manually backing up applications because every once in a while computer problems cause a problem with the load and the 3rd party apps can be lost and then must be manually redownloaded again. Really, the upgrade process is very simple.

Thanks John
it does seem to a relative newbie that this process is a lot moer complicated than it should be
all i want is to simply run the latest OS and DM and for them to be offered to me when available and for the upgrade to be a simple case of backup and then install.

AMEN, to that! I feel like a real dufus just trying to get the latest downloads appropriate to my computer and BB8310 (AT&T). Some have kindly offered links but they seem as confusing as all hell.

The instructions for the OS upgrades at the top of this 8310 section are quite plain and simple to follow.

Whats the confusion?? Your installing the OS from an Italian cell phone provider.
There is NO latest and greatest OS release from AT&T.
If hacking your BB and installing non standard firmware/software is too confusing, perhaps you should wait until AT&T actually releases the real deal that was properly made for your phone?

If I didn't need some constructive assistance, I wouldn't have posted my inquiry. As a novice to all this, I hoped for a more thoughtful response.
