Default Internet Not Working on Curve (but im paying for it!)

Please Login to Remove!

I have the tethering plan for my AT&T Curve.

I've successfully setup the phone for tethering and got it to work w/o a problem. One day recently our DSL was down at my house and I used my BB for access. Not the fastest, and there was some latency in creating connections, but all in all, it worked and got the job done.

I tried setting up my laptop last night and realized I didnt have my blackberry desktop software cd. So I downloaded the latest version last night and installed it on my laptop. I connected up everything as normal, the same way I did on my pc.

The connection speeds were terrible, I was downloading a patch for game at maybe 1-5KB per 10 seconds. Not acceptible, and not normal.

After about 30 minutes, the connection failed entirely. I ran

c:/>ipconfig /all

I was able to see what my ip address, subnet, gateway, and dns servers were.

I could ping my default gateway, but I couldn't even ping my dns servers. If I tried to run a tracert to an outside IP, it would fail to.

Now, I can't get any Internet service on my phone. Google Maps isn't working, I can't log into Jivetalk, I can't connect to webcams I have setup on MobiScope.

One thing I noticed is that in the top right of the phone, it says "edge"

Isn't it supposed to be EDGE if the internet is working?

I'm googling it all now, but I want to make sure I understand why this isn't working before I call AT&T. Anybody else having network problems? Or did I do something to cause this?

Welcome to the forums!

If the device has lowercase edge it won't work for data access. You need it to say uppercase EDGE. You could try doing a hard reset: remove the battery from the device (while it is still powered on) for 30 seconds, then reinsert.

Thanks. That's what I figured. I haven't tried doing a hard reset because I didn't change anything.... well, I just did the reset, and my bb is booting up.

could this be related to memory? doing a hard reset seemed to help. I didn't change any configuration settings. The EDGE simply stopped working and crashed.

must of been Desktop manager 4.3, because as soon as I downgraded to 4.2.2, my problems went away

So now you have EDGE instead of edge?

Sounds coincidental. Memory usage and yuor version of Desktop Manager won't affect your coverage. It is, however, possible that the BB was "stuck" in lower case edge.

Correct me if I am wrong, but when tethering is set up (at least with my provider) it uses the TCP settings and TCP is different data than BIS. As long as he has TCP access and it set up properly shouldn't it work anyway? Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong.
