Default What version of Desktop Manager??

Please Login to Remove!

I have a 4.2 OS version Curve.

Does the version of Desktop manager have any affinity to the OS version of the Device?

I ask this because I installed the latest version of Desktop Manager on my laptop, and as I tried to use it as a modem it would work for a few minutes, then fail, and then crash my curve as well. it would kill the EDGE connection, and break any apps I had running on the curve that were dependant on teh EDGE connection.

I never had this problem using the device as a modem on my PC, which has the version of Desktop manager that came with the device.

edit: The version of DM that came on the CD with the curve is 4.2.2

My guess is that it is 4.2 service Pack 2 ??

yes, im googling....

Wirelessly posted (At&t curve)

It shouldn't matter which version you use. However, 4.3 is kinda buggy. You should stick to 4.2

I would use Desktop Manager 4.2. Most people find it more stable. Since your on AT&T I would also recommend that you install AT&T's Communication Manager to handle your tethering needs.

Can I use AT&T's software in place of Desktop Manager?

I know you have to have DM running in order for tethering to work.

I already have the modem configured, and i've done it enough that its a snap...

install DM, setup the modem, add the AT command, disable IP Header compression, etc...

I have AT&T Curve 8310 and run DM 4.3. Communication Manager does not need DM running to work. You need DM running (actually only Device Manager, which you can have running without the full DM loaded) if you are going to USB tether without Communication Manager (by setting your own modem connection settings). I got Bluetooth to connect without Connection Mgr or DM running, just with a modem connection setting and XP BT stack. Communicaton Mgr doesn't take the place of DM as far as synching, etc.

Steve,

I just downloaded the Comm Manager yesterday and installed it but even after i connect my BB to my laptop using USB Comm Manager still says no wireless device connected. I was looking at the quick start guide and it said i had to check a box

Note: On the Post-Install Configuration screen,
data-capable handset users should check the
box: “Configure a phone as a tethered modem”.

There wasnt any post-install configuration screens. So i dont know if i am doing something wrong on the install... Any help would be appericated. Should i make a new post?

when you have your device connected via USB and Com Mgr on, go to control panel, phones and modems, modems, and list the modems and the ports.

Next go to Network, options and list the dial up profiles you have, do you have one that is labelled "GSM" ?

This will help diagnose, I assume you can USB synch with DM no problem?

Go to the 3G profile and check properties, is it using your 56k com 6 modem? what is the phone #, mine is *99***1#

I read somewhere that 56k profile wont work, it needs to be standard 36k or just standard modem. Yes my Comm Mgr set up the GSM profile. Try deleting the 56k modem you have and uninstall com mgr then try reinstalling. It should load its own profile unless your comm mgr set up the 3G profile, if not then delete that too.

For Com Mgr I have a GSM profile with "standard modem" and extra intiializaton strings AT+CGDCONT=4,"IP","isp.cingular"

Try the above remove/reinstall, the other modems are your pc modem and a bluetooth software modem, yes? We will succeed!

Steve,

Was looking at the G3 connection and it was set up with ppp as the phone number for some reason... i changed it to what you had and then just tried connecting for the hell of it and it works awesome and decent speed too... I am not gonna worry about the communication manager... if it works dont mess with it right? Thanks so much for your help...

Great, if you don't want to have DM running when you are tethering, you can go to the device manager icon in the tray and open it up, click the box to load it on start up, that way you can tether without having to load the full DM program, only the device manger resident app needs to run.
